Ponders End Loft Storage

For homes in Ponders End, we make loft storage from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Each piece is finished by spray or by hand, in the colour you choose.

  • Wasted space behind the knee walls
  • A sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe
  • Furniture that cannot get up to the loft

Loft storage for your home in Ponders End

What affects the cost of loft storage

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • How square the room is

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that is part of the price. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

What we need to know

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Your postcode and the borough

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

How we make loft storage for Ponders End

Dormers are a natural place for shelving or a small desk. Their sides are often angled, and their walls rarely straight. We scribe the furniture to follow them. It uses space that might otherwise be wasted. At the design visit in Ponders End, we will look at what fits. People usually come to us about a converted loft with no fitted furniture and a loft room that doubles as an office or guest room, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

In a family house, the hall and stairs typically carry the most clutter. With interwar houses, semis and detached homes a large part of the housing around Ponders End, well-planned storage by the door or under the stairs can take a lot of it. Anything that needs to stay reachable, like meters or a fuse board, is designed around.

Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Looking after your furniture

A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:

  • Note how narrow the loft stairs are
  • Make a list of what you want to store in the eaves
  • Mention any parking rules on your street
  • Find out what’s behind the eaves, from insulation to vents

When you load the drawers and cupboards, put heavy things low. That keeps the drawers running smoothly. Shelves are made for what you told us you’d store.

Every so often, look at the handles and hinges. A loose screw is easy to tighten before it works loose. If a door drops or a drawer catches, use our contact form and tell us.

Common questions about loft storage

I live near Ponders End station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Enfield and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Will eaves storage block the ventilation?

A good design avoids that. We look behind the knee wall at the measuring visit and plan the storage so air can still move. Insulation and ventilation work itself is not ours.

Can you build a wardrobe under a sloping ceiling?

Yes. Bespoke wardrobes are made to the angle of the ceiling. Hanging goes where there’s height, with shelves where it’s low. It is scribed to the slope and walls.

Do you do the loft conversion too?

No, we build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded. A conversion is building work, and Building Regulations apply. Once your loft is converted, we can design the storage.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Electrical work is not something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.

What it is made from

Plinths and scribe strips

Loft rooms are seldom square. We use scribe strips and a plinth to take up the difference. That keeps the lines neat all round.

Pull-out drawers

Drawers along the knee wall make a neat, low run of storage. The top can act as a shelf. We agree the layout during the design visit.

Storage in Ponders End homes: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Ponders End were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 35%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 19%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how eaves cupboards are fixed and fitted. Part of Ponders End is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. Around a third of the homes in the neighbourhood around Ponders End (about 35%) date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Loft conversions are common in houses of that age, and the eaves can take fitted storage.

If you live near Enfield Town Park, eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. Forty Hall, about 2.2 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a dormer in a converted loft can hold shelves or a small desk. If you live in a flat close to Ponders End station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

What happens on fitting day

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in.

  1. You contact us about storage in your converted loft.
  2. We visit to measure the loft and the way up, including the top flight and any tight turn.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. Everything is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections small enough for the loft stairs.
  5. We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to fit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Standard furniture does not allow for the insulation and ventilation behind the eaves. We plan the storage around what’s behind the knee wall. That is important for the health of the loft. Bays, box rooms and stair bulkheads are where off-the-shelf furniture struggles most, and those are common in interwar houses. Built-in pieces are designed to fit them.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.
