Fitted wardrobes in N9: how it works
Doors can be hinged or sliding. Hinged doors open a whole section at once, though they need room in front to open. Sliding doors save that space in a narrow room, but only part of the inside is open at any one time. We weigh them up with you during the design visit. Most enquiries start with clothes with nowhere proper to go and a bedroom that never feels tidy; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote.
- You send us a few details about the room and the storage you need.
- We come to measure the room, check the walls and ceiling and agree the layout. We also look at the way in, in case the sections need to go up narrow stairs.
- You receive a quote in writing setting out the wardrobes, doors and finish.
- We make the carcasses, doors and drawers in our workshop, sized to get through your doors and up the stairs.
- We install the wardrobes, hang the doors and fit the rails, shelves and drawers. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.
How our quotes work
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Fitted wardrobes for homes across N9
Many older bedrooms across N9 keep a chimney breast with an alcove on each side. In rooms without one, a full wall of storage often works best. Either way, each piece is fitted to the walls and floor as they are.
In the N9 postcode district, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 33%) and before 1919 (about 26%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Around a third of the homes in N9 (about 33%) date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead. About 30% of households in N9 live in terraced houses, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. London terraces normally have a small back bedroom and alcoves in the main bedroom, both good spaces for fitted storage.
Our area covers the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City, N9 included. Wherever you are, the job starts with a design visit.
Edmonton: The wider area includes historic houses like Bruce Castle, about 1.8 miles south. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. Living in a block of flats near Edmonton Green station? Then fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.
Do you need fitted wardrobes?
Couples often want storage that works for two. We can plan separate sections for each person.
If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:
- A sloping ceiling that is hard to use
- Storage boxes stacked under the bed
- Not enough hanging space
- Several odd pieces where one run of storage would do
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.
Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Is bespoke worth it?
Walls and floors in older homes are seldom straight or level. A standalone wardrobe can lean, rock or show tapering gaps. Ours are levelled on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
- How the furniture will be finished, and where
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
What it’s made from
Moisture-resistant MDF
Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well, so we use it for doors, end panels and the faces you see. It suits bedrooms where the wardrobe sits on an external wall.
Plinths and scribe strips
In period rooms, we normally scribe the sides and the top. It is what makes the wardrobe look built in.
When you need someone else
We design, make and fit the furniture. In practice, that means:
- Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
- Removing walls, chimney breasts or any structural work
- The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
Questions we are often asked
Can you build wardrobes around a bed?
Yes. A common layout is tall cupboards either side of the bed and storage above the headboard. We plan it so the bed fits comfortably and the room still feels open.
Who chooses the colour?
You do. We agree the colour with you, and it is set out in the quote.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us.
How long does it take to fit wardrobes?
The fitting depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The wardrobes are built in our workshop first.
What if my bedroom floor isn’t level?
Floors in older houses are often out of level. We set fitted wardrobes level on a plinth or adjustable feet and the doors line up.
Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in N9?
Yes. We work across all 32 London boroughs and the City of London, N9 included.
How is the furniture painted?
You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
