Fitted wardrobes in EN3: how it works
Rooms under a slope are common in loft conversions and top-floor rooms. A fitted wardrobe can follow the slope, keeping long hanging where there’s height and drawers or shelves lower down. Space that is hard to use otherwise becomes useful storage. We make fitted wardrobes from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about damp or musty clothes against an external wall and clothes with nowhere proper to go.
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
- You get in touch and let us know about the room.
- At the design visit we measure the room and agree the layout and doors.
- We send a quote in writing.
- The wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then sprayed if you chose a spray finish.
- The wardrobes are fitted and scribed, with any hand painting done in the room.
- At the end we check each door and drawer with you; fresh paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.
What goes into your quote
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We will talk through what you need inside at the design visit, and the quote follows.

Around Ponders End, we cover homes near St Matthews Church, Oasis Academy Hadley and NiW Furniture pub, among other places. You’ll also find Enfield Town Park (1.9 miles west) and St Matthew's CofE Primary School (within half a mile north). There is a railway station in Ponders End itself: Ponders End station. A little further out are Edmonton Green Shopping Centre (1.3 miles south-west) and Museum of Enfield (1.7 miles west).
Bedroom storage across EN3
Across EN3, including Ponders End, Enfield Highway and Enfield Lock, bedrooms come in every size. Each design uses the room’s own widths and height. The inside layout is planned around your things.
In the EN3 postcode district, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 38%) and the years since 2000 (about 18%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. About 38% of homes in EN3 date from between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead. About 35% of households in EN3 live in terraced houses, based on Census 2021. London terraces typically have a small back bedroom and alcoves in the main bedroom, which suit fitted furniture.
Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs, so a van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit.
Ponders End: The wider area includes historic houses like Forty Hall, about 2.2 miles north-west. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. If you live in a flat close to Ponders End station, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.
Where other trades come in
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:
- Decorating or plastering the room
- The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
- Moving switches or sockets, which needs an electrician
Materials and finishes
Hanging rails
We keep the top rail at a height you can reach without a step. Higher space above can hold shelves for things you use less.
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF has no grain, so painted doors look smooth and even. The moisture-resistant grade is our choice for fitted work.
What prompts fitted wardrobes
The usual reason is simple: there isn’t enough storage. Clothes end up on chairs, in boxes under the bed or in another room. Built-in wardrobes make use of the full wall, up to the ceiling, so you get more storage from the same floor space.
Most of the enquiries we get are about things like these:
- Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes
- A bedroom that never feels tidy
- Damp or musty clothes against an external wall
- Space under the eaves going to waste
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is quick to buy.
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
Questions we are often asked
What if my bedroom floor isn’t level?
Uneven floors are normal in older homes. The wardrobes are levelled on adjustable feet or a plinth and the doors line up.
Should I send photos?
Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough measurements. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form.
How do I get started?
Just drop us a line using the contact form. It’s useful to send rough sizes and a few photos, and we will arrange a design visit.
How long does it take to fit wardrobes?
The time on site depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We will explain what fitting day involves before we start.
What affects the price of fitted wardrobes?
It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish. The price comes in a quote in writing after the design visit.
Do you cover areas outside London?
No. Our work is in London only: every London borough and the City of London.
What can go inside a fitted wardrobe?
You choose the mix of hanging, shelves and drawers. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves, drawers and shoe space can all be included. We talk it through at the design visit.
