Fitted cupboards in Shirley Oaks

Boxing in a boiler is a job that needs care. The boiler maker’s instructions set out the clearances and ventilation it needs, and the cupboard is built to respect them. Doors open wide enough for servicing, and any work on the boiler itself is for a Gas Safe engineer. Typical reasons to get in touch are tidying away the gas and electricity meters and using the full height of a room, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Landings in houses from between the wars are often roomier than in a Victorian terrace, which can hold fitted storage for linen and spare bedding. Around Shirley Oaks, where interwar homes and semis are a big part of the housing, it is worth looking up as well as down. If a boiler or cylinder sits there, it keeps its clearances and access.

You get the quote in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

How we price fitted cupboards

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:

  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • The overall size of the piece
  • How square the room is
  • Spray painting or hand painting

Awkward rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

Getting in touch

These details help when you contact us:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • What the furniture needs to hold

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Why people ask for fitted cupboards in Shirley Oaks

Others want their cupboards to match the rest of the house. We can design doors that suit the style of the house, so the cupboard looks as if it belongs.

If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:

  • A cupboard for the meters with easy access
  • Boxing in a boiler with room for servicing
  • Using the full height of a room
  • Cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving

For an older house near Shirley Methodist Church, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size.

What to check before you book

  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Whether they measure the room themselves

How fitting day works

At the end, we tidy up. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and explain how to look after the paint. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so it’s worth mentioning at the measuring visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. First, you let us know about the space and what you need to store. It might be a hallway, a landing, a utility or a boot room.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and talk through doors, shelves and rails.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish, for you to read through.
  4. We make the carcasses, doors and shelves in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The cupboards are fitted in your home and trimmed to follow the walls. We check each door and shelf with you before we leave.

Before fitting day

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

How to get a quote

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Before and after fitting day

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Keep boiler vents and meter access clear
  • Go easy on new doors for a while
  • Check stairs, landings and doorways for access
  • Check your lease if you live in a flat

Once the cupboards are fitted, the paint needs time to cure fully. At first, go easy on the doors and shelves and wipe them with a soft, damp cloth only. In time, a damp cloth and a little mild soap keeps them clean.

Before the design visit, think about what will go in each cupboard. Coats, shoes, cleaning things and bedding all need different depths and fittings, so it’s useful to know this early.

Why bespoke in Shirley Oaks?

Ready-made cupboards are typically made from chipboard with a printed or plastic finish. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, painted in a colour you choose, finished to suit the room. Bays, box rooms and stair bulkheads are where off-the-shelf furniture struggles most, and those are common in interwar houses. Fitted furniture is made around them.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

Questions from Shirley Oaks

I live near Elmers End station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room.

Can you make fitted cupboards for a home in Shirley Oaks?

Yes, Shirley Oaks is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Croydon and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.

Can a fitted cupboard cover the meters and fuse board?

Yes. We can build a cupboard that hides them neatly without getting in the way of access. Moving them isn’t our work; that’s for your supplier or an electrician.

Do pictures help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

How long does fitting take?

Every job is different. The time the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote, so you will know before we start.
