Addiscombe homes and fitted cupboards
About 44% of the homes in the area around Addiscombe went up before 1919, and about 27% between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted cupboards are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Addiscombe include Church of St Mildred (Grade II), under half a mile south-west, and Addiscombe Farm Cottage (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south-west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. The share of homes built before 1919 around Addiscombe, about 44%, is well above the figure for Croydon as a whole, about 29%, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That makes period details like uneven walls, alcoves and picture rails more likely to shape the design.
For families living near Oasis Academy Shirley Park, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. The wider area includes historic houses like Addington Palace, about 2 miles south-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, an old boiler or airing cupboard can be rebuilt with proper shelves. For a flat near Norwood Junction station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Fitted cupboards in Addiscombe
Few walls in an older house are truly straight, and floors and ceilings can be out of level too. Every cupboard is scribed, trimmed by hand to meet the wall, then set level on adjustable feet or a plinth. We work around skirting, coving and picture rails, so the cupboard sits comfortably in the room. If your home has a hallway cupboard for coats and shoes and using the full height of a room, that is what fitted cupboards are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
In an older home, panelled doors and painted mouldings may suit; in a newer one, plain flat doors may fit better. Whatever your home in Addiscombe is like, the door style is part of the design conversation. The paint colour is agreed with you, whichever finish you pick.
The furniture is built in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

When you need someone else
Not everything around fitted cupboards is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:
- Building work or structural changes
- Wiring for lights or sockets
- Work on a boiler, which is for a Gas Safe registered engineer

When is bespoke worth it?
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
What happens on fitting day
You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and your quote sets out the fitting days. It helps to clear the room and the route in before fitting day, including pictures on nearby walls. Floors and doorways are protected before anything comes in. Then the sections come in and are joined in place.
- You get in touch and tell us where the cupboards should go. It might be a hallway, a landing, a utility or a boot room.
- We visit, take careful measurements and go through the design with you.
- We send a quote that sets out the design, the materials and the finish, for you to read through.
- Everything is built and finished in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The cupboards are fitted in your home and trimmed to follow the walls. We check each door and shelf with you before we leave.
Preparing the room
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Questions we are often asked
Can you make fitted cupboards for a home in Addiscombe?
Yes, we work across Croydon, Addiscombe included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Addiscombe?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
What if the stairs or lift are small?
We plan the route in at the measuring visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and each section is made to a size that will get through.
What do fitted cupboards cost?
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Each cupboard is different, so we price it after measuring. To get started, message us from the contact page.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Boiler and meter cupboards are hard to get right with standard units. The space needs to suit the boiler’s instructions and leave meters reachable and fitted joinery can be designed around them. Standard units come with shelves and rails where the maker put them, rather than where you need them. Fitted furniture is laid out inside around your things.
There’s no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it at the design visit.
