If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features such as panelling can require listed building consent. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. More than a third of the homes in the area around Shirley Oaks (about 42%) date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead.
For families living near Oasis Academy Shirley Park, walk-in wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. Close to Ashburton Park? Morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window.

About our walk-in wardrobes in Shirley Oaks
Hanging space is the heart of most walk-in wardrobes. Long hanging suits coats and dresses, and two rails stacked one above the other suit shirts, jackets and trousers. We plan the mix around what you actually wear. People usually come to us about storage for clothes that have outgrown the wardrobe and a calmer, clearer bedroom, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Around Shirley Oaks, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the third bedroom is often small, sitting over the stairs. Small rooms like that suit walk-in wardrobes, whether the room is a guest room, a dressing room or a study. Every wall is measured and checked, even in a house that looks square.
The quote comes in writing, so there’s time to read it properly. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Materials and finishes
Shelves
Upper shelves are good for cases and seasonal clothes, with everyday items lower down.
Moisture-resistant MDF
Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well, giving a smooth finish.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Standard systems come in set widths and heights, so the space above and at the ends is often wasted. We can build right up to the ceiling and from wall to wall, which can add a lot of storage. Bays, box rooms and stair bulkheads are where off-the-shelf furniture struggles most, and those are common in interwar houses. Fitted furniture is made around them.
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
Why choose us
- A design visit, then a quote in writing
- More than 300 projects completed
- Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
- Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose

What else we make in Shirley Oaks
When is bespoke worth it?
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
Common questions about walk-in wardrobes
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Shirley Oaks?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Do you cover homes near Elmers End station?
Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.
Do walk-in wardrobes need ventilation?
Yes. A room full of clothes needs air moving through it, particularly against a cooler external wall. The units are designed with ventilation in mind.
Can I send photos ahead of the visit?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough sizes. You can send them when you get in touch through our contact form.
Do I need the building owner’s consent?
Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations. Check your lease, as we cannot advise on it.
Fitting day, step by step
With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.
- You let us know about the room and what you want to store, from long coats to shoes.
- We visit to measure up and go through the layout.
- A quote follows, setting out the design and finish, ready for you to check.
- We build everything in our workshop.
- Fitting day: the units are fitted and trimmed to the room.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
Starting with a design visit
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.
Advice
The problems walk-in wardrobes solve
Some homes have a small room that never quite earns its keep. Fitted out as a walk-in wardrobe, it becomes part of everyday life than keeping a bed in it.
Some of the things we are asked to solve are these:
- More space for clothes and shoes
- A use for a small spare room
- A bedroom without crowded wardrobes
- Room for two wardrobes in one space
The wider area includes historic houses such as Addington Palace, about 1.8 miles south-east. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
- A quote in writing that sets out the job
- Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
