Fitted cupboards for homes in Broad Green

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Broad Green were built before 1919 (about 38%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 22%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. 4 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Broad Green. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Croydon sets its own rules. If your street in Broad Green is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed. Let us know about parking at the design visit.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like West Croydon United Reformed Church, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. If your children go to Elmwood Infant School or a school nearby, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. Close to Waddon Ponds? Fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

About our fitted cupboards in Broad Green

Gas meters, electricity meters and fuse boards tend to be where you’d least like them, such as by the front door or in a hallway corner. A fitted cupboard can hide them neatly and still keeps access clear. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so the doors or panels are planned with that in mind. If your home has cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving and landing shelves for bedding and towels, fitted cupboards made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

In an older home, panelled doors and painted mouldings may suit; in a newer one, plain flat doors may fit better. For a home in Broad Green, door styles are talked through during the design visit. The paint colour is agreed with you, whichever finish you pick.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

When is bespoke worth it?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

What it’s made from

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting suits doors and panels that you want to look crisp and even, and it is finished before fitting day.

Doors and drawer fronts

Where space is tight, we plan how each door swings, so nothing blocks the way.

Where other trades come in

We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It is useful to know these before you plan the job:

  • Wiring for lights or sockets
  • Connecting appliances to water or waste
  • Work on a boiler, which is for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register

Questions from Broad Green

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Broad Green?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to West Croydon station?

Yes, homes across Croydon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Can you hide my gas and electricity meters?

Yes, and we keep them easy to reach. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so the doors or panels are planned to open easily.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations. We can’t advise on leases, so please check yours.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

From workshop to your room

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. It is useful to clear the room and the route in before fitting day, including pictures on nearby walls. We cover floors and doorways first. Sections are then carried in and assembled.

  1. You contact us about fitted cupboards.
  2. We visit to measure the space and the route in from the street, including the stairs and doorways.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route.
  5. The sections are carried in, joined and set level. The finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand on site.

Advice

Practical tips

Getting the most from fitted cupboards starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Think about how the cupboards will get in
  • Look at your lease before fixing to the walls
  • Make sure walls are dry before we fit
  • Keep boiler vents and meter access clear

Once the cupboards are fitted, the paint needs time to cure fully. Treat the doors gently at first and wipe them with a soft, damp cloth only. After that, a soft cloth and mild soapy water is all they need.

At the design visit, let us know how parking and access work. Many London streets are in controlled parking zones and some blocks need lifts or deliveries booked ahead.
