Fitted cupboards in Slade Green

How we make fitted cupboards for Slade Green

Landings often have a corner or a stretch of wall that does nothing. We can turn it into a linen cupboard, or storage for bedding and spare towels, with shelves spaced to suit what goes on them. The doors are planned so they open cleanly on a narrow landing. If your home has cupboards that suit a period house and landing shelves for bedding and towels, fitted cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Older rooms often suit panelled doors, newer rooms plainer ones. Whatever your home in Slade Green is like, the door style is part of the design conversation. The paint colour is agreed with you, whichever finish you pick.

A written quote follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

How it is made

Hand-painted finish

If you’d like the cupboards painted to match a wall or the woodwork, hand painting on site works well and makes later touch-ups easy.

Shelves

A shelf that sags looks tired quickly with the right thickness, lip or support.

Fitted cupboards in Slade Green: local notes

In the neighbourhood around Slade Green, the largest groups of homes date from between 1973 and 1999 (about 27%) and the years since 2000 (about 27%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The Oak Road Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Slade Green. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. Newer homes are more common around Slade Green than across Bexley: about 27% date from 2000 onwards, against about 10%, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Newer homes often have stud walls and compact rooms, so fixings and sizes are planned with that in mind.

For an older house near St. Augustine's Church, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size. Hall Place and Gardens, about 2.1 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a shallow cupboard in a narrow hall can hold coats without blocking the way. Close to Braeburn Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place.

Slade Green is in the London Borough of Bexley, about 5 miles south-west of Sidcup. We cover Slade Green as part of our work across Bexley, and the process is the same everywhere we work. Across Bexley, we cover Slade Green.

Questions we are often asked

Does a conservation area in or near Slade Green affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Is Slade Green in the area you cover for fitted cupboards?

Yes, Slade Green is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Bexley and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

What materials do you use for fitted cupboards?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray painting or hand painting. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

Can a fitted cupboard cover the meters and fuse board?

Yes. We can build a cupboard that hides them neatly and still leaves them reachable. Moving them isn’t our work; that is for your supplier or an electrician.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.

How long does fitting take?

It depends on the job. How long the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and your quote sets out the fitting days, so you’ll know before we start.

What affects the cost of fitted cupboards

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • The overall size of the piece
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Parking and unloading on your street

There is no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Helping us understand the room

Some details help us understand the job before we visit. It’s useful to include:

  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • What the furniture needs to hold

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we have measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, send us a few details through our contact form.

Before and after fitting day

Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Check your lease if you live in a flat
  • Mention any parking or lift rules
  • Have damp sorted before fitting
  • Give the paint time to cure fully

Once the cupboards are fitted, the paint needs time to cure fully. Treat the doors gently at first and avoid heavy cleaning. After that, a soft cloth and mild soapy water is all they need.

Any damp should be dealt with before furniture goes against a wall. A cupboard on a damp wall can trap moisture, and external walls can be colder than internal ones. We can allow for ventilation where it is needed.

Fitting day, step by step

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made in our workshop come in next, one at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Whatever the age of your home, the furniture is fitted to the walls you have, with scribing where they wander and packing where floors dip. Hand painting can happen on site, while spray-painted pieces come ready from the workshop.

  1. We start with a short note from you about the space and what it needs to hold.
  2. We visit, take careful measurements and go through the design with you. For a boiler cupboard, we plan for the clearances and ventilation in the manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. You get a written quote for the cupboards we’ve agreed.
  4. We make the carcasses, doors and shelves in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cupboards in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. We check each door and shelf with you before we leave.

Before fitting day

  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
