Slade Green Fitted Wardrobes

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make fitted wardrobes for homes in Slade Green, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Too little room for clothes
  • Standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall
  • A sloping ceiling that’s hard to use

Fitted wardrobes in Slade Green

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in Slade Green

I live near Slade Green station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Bexley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room.

Do you make fitted wardrobes for homes in Slade Green?

Yes. Slade Green is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Bexley and London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

Can fitted wardrobes go on an external wall?

Yes. We plan ventilation behind and inside wardrobes on external walls, using moisture-resistant MDF. Any existing damp needs dealing with before fitting.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

The time on site depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We’ll explain what fitting day involves before we start.

How is the price worked out?

It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish, along with access and parking. The price comes in a quote in writing after the design visit.

Fitted wardrobes in Slade Green: what you get

Rail heights are set for the clothes they hold. A tall section suits long coats and dresses, while two rails, one over the other, suit shirts and jackets. We also think about who uses it. People normally come to us about clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms and bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Homes in an area like Slade Green can come from many different periods, and the walls in a bedroom might be brick, blockwork, lath and plaster or plasterboard. We check during the design visit and choose fixings for each one. If the room has a chimney breast, the alcoves can take fitted storage; if not, a full wall often works best.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Flats, conversions and lettings

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so tell us about it at the measuring visit.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

The problems fitted wardrobes solve

Others simply want the room to feel calmer. A run of painted doors from wall to wall looks quieter than several separate pieces.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • Space under the eaves going to waste
  • A tight bedroom where doors get in the way
  • Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall
  • Several odd pieces where one run of storage would do

If you live in a period home close to St. Augustine's Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

What to check before you book

  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?

How to choose a carpenter in London

Slade Green homes and fitted wardrobes

About 27% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Slade Green went up between 1973 and 1999, and about 27% since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. The Oak Road Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Slade Green. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Bexley sets its own rules. If your street in Slade Green is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension through the council may be needed. Let us know what the parking is like during the design visit.

If you live in a flat close to Slade Green station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If you live near Braeburn Park, fitted wardrobes are usually planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.

Fitting day, step by step

There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed at the measuring visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If you live in a block, check any rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours; for a house, steps, paths and parking are the things to mention. We plan the details of the day at the design visit. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and tell us what you keep in your wardrobes now.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan the inside: long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers.
  3. A written quote follows, listing the layout inside, the doors and the finish.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the rails, shelves and drawers you chose.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted in your home, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site, and the inside fittings go in last.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Getting a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a written quote, so you can take your time with it. To book one, message us from the contact page.

What affects the cost of fitted wardrobes

What you pay depends on:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • How big the furniture is
  • Doors and drawers, and how many

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit, then set it out in the quote.

Helping us understand the room

Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit

It’s useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them over, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Could you do it yourself?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
