Fitted furniture across DA7

Our fitted wardrobes across DA7

In a period bedroom, the alcoves beside the chimney breast make natural wardrobe spaces. Wardrobes in both alcoves leave the chimney breast on show. Picture rails and cornices can be met neatly or cut around. We make fitted wardrobes from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are dusty space on top of the wardrobe and no space in front for doors to swing.

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the bedroom, and we arrange a design visit.
  2. We come to measure the room, check the walls and ceiling and agree the layout. We also look at the way in, in case the sections need to go up narrow stairs.
  3. Your quote follows, with the layout, materials and finish set out.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted in your home, set level and scribed to the walls and ceiling. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.

There’s no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.

Why work with us

  • Over 300 projects completed
  • Work across the whole of London
  • Saturday visits and fitting by arrangement
  • A spray or hand-painted finish

Starting with a design visit

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Homes across DA7 and their bedrooms

We make fitted wardrobes for homes across DA7, in Erith, Northumberland Heath and Lessness Heath and beyond. On an external wall, ventilation is designed in to help keep condensation away. Each wall is checked so the fixings suit it.

About 35% of the homes in the DA7 postcode district went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 23% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. About 35% of homes in DA7 date from between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 51% of households in the DA7 postcode district, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs, so a van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

Bexleyheath: Red House, about 0.4 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. If your home is one of the older houses near Trinity Baptist Church, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Boards, parts and paint

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done on site once the wardrobes are fitted. Small marks are simple to touch up, and it works well in a period bedroom.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, so it is a good choice for carcasses, shelves and drawer boxes. Its layered edge can be painted or left on show.

Tips worth knowing

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Check the route into your flat, not just the room
  • Measure the gap between the wardrobe wall and the bed
  • Think about where you will keep shoes, bags and folded clothes
  • Check your lease before fixing furniture to walls in a leasehold flat

New paintwork is dry to the touch long before it has fully cured. At first, handle the doors with care.

Make sure vents at the top or bottom of the wardrobe aren’t blocked, particularly on an external wall. Look out for a musty smell or spots on clothes and deal with any damp early.

What affects the price in DA7

Several things affect the price:

  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • The overall size of the piece
  • The internal fittings

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

What we need to know

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • How you want to use the space
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

When is bespoke worth it?

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Bought wardrobes come in the maker’s finishes. We paint fitted wardrobes in the colour you choose. Bespoke work does take longer than buying from a shop, because of the design visit, the quote and the making.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • How they handle walls that are not straight
  • How parking will work on your street

Questions from DA7

Can wardrobes be fitted on an uneven floor?

Floors in older houses are often out of level. We set fitted wardrobes level on a plinth or adjustable feet and the doors line up.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

The time on site depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We’ll explain what fitting day involves before we start.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not usually. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Can you fit wardrobes in a top-floor flat?

We make the wardrobes in sections sized to the route into your home. That’s why we measure the route, not just the room. If you are in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to walls.

Do you work outside London?

No. We work in London and nowhere else, across all the boroughs and the City of London.

Do you do plastering or decorating?

No. We don’t plaster or decorate, so any work on the walls is for a plasterer or decorator. We finish the furniture itself, as set out in your quote.
