Fitted wardrobes in DA1: how it works
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, and a wardrobe packed against one can trap moist air. Where a wardrobe goes on an external wall, we plan ventilation behind and inside it. We use moisture-resistant MDF, which suits that position. We make fitted wardrobes from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are damp or musty clothes against an external wall and wardrobes that are full to bursting.
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote.
- You get in touch and tell us about the bedroom, including any slopes, windows or alcoves.
- We visit to measure the room and discuss the design. We also look at the way in, in case the sections need to go up narrow stairs.
- You receive a written quote setting out the wardrobes, doors and finish.
- The wardrobes are built in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The wardrobes are fitted in your home, set level and scribed to the walls and ceiling. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.
How our quotes work
The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Bedroom storage across DA1
Across DA1, bedrooms range from period rooms with high ceilings to compact rooms in newer blocks. Fitted wardrobes are drawn up to suit the room you actually have, with the inside laid out around what you keep.
In the DA1 postcode district, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 34%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 29%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Around a third of the homes in the DA1 postcode district (about 34%) date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead. A quarter or more of the homes in the DA1 postcode district (about 29%) were built between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Bedrooms from that era tend to be regular, so fitted furniture can run wall to wall, fixed to suit the wall.
We cover the whole of London, so homes in DA1 are well within our area. Let us know about access and parking when you first get in touch.
Bexley: Living in a block of flats near Bexley station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. For families living near Old Bexley Church of England School, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.
The problems fitted wardrobes solve
An awkward room is another reason. A sloping ceiling, a chimney breast, a low window or a door in the wrong place can defeat standard furniture. Fitted wardrobes are shaped around them.
Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:
- Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
- Storage boxes stacked under the bed
- An tricky slope in a loft bedroom
- Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes
Flat-pack or bespoke?
Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Flats, conversions and lettings
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We can’t advise on your lease.
What we do not do
It is worth being clear about where our work stops:
- Redecorating around the wardrobes
- Moving switches or sockets, which needs an electrician
- The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
Materials and finishes
Hanging rails
Rails are placed so the top one is within easy reach. Higher space above can hold shelves for things you use less.
Spray-painted finish
A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, which gives large doors a smooth, even surface. It works on plain and panelled doors alike.
Common questions about fitted wardrobes
Is it possible to build wardrobes into a loft room with a slope?
Yes. The wardrobe is shaped to the ceiling line, with long hanging where there is height and shelves or drawers where it is lower. It turns awkward space into storage.
How much will my fitted wardrobe cost?
Each room is quoted on its own: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. You’ll get a quote in writing once we have measured up.
Which is better for fitted wardrobes, hinged or sliding doors?
That depends on how much space there is in front of the wardrobe. If a bed or a door is close, sliding doors can make more sense. We will look at the room with you at the measuring visit.
Do you make the furniture yourselves?
Everything is made in our workshop for your room, then fitted in your home. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Electrical work is not something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.
How long are you in the house for fitting?
The time on site depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We’ll talk you through what to expect beforehand.
Do you make good the walls afterwards?
No. We make, fit and finish the furniture, and plastering and decorating are for other trades. We paint the furniture itself, by spray or by hand.
