Under-stairs storage for homes in Slade Green
Deep pull-out drawers bring the back of the space within reach. Instead of crawling in to find something, you slide the drawer out and everything is in view. At the tall end, a cupboard works well for coats, an ironing board or the vacuum. A mix of drawers and cupboards is often the best use of the space. We make under-stairs cupboards from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about an old cupboard door that doesn’t suit the hall and a hallway crowded with coats and shoes.
In a part of London with mixed housing, like much of the city, no two homes have quite the same walls and floors. Under-stairs cupboards are scribed and levelled on site, so they look straight even where the room is not. The finish, spray-painted or hand-painted, is agreed with you.
The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the under-stairs cupboard we have designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it is finished.

Questions we are often asked
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Do you make under-stairs storage for homes in Slade Green?
Yes. We cover all of Bexley and the rest of London, and Slade Green is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.
Can under-stairs storage work around the fuse board?
Yes. We plan the storage so the meter or fuse board stays easy to reach, often with a door of its own. Meter readers and engineers need access, so we never box them in.
Are drawers or cupboards better under the stairs?
Many designs use both. Drawers make the most of the low, deep end of the space, while a cupboard at the tall end takes coats, the vacuum or an ironing board. We talk it through at the measuring visit.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us.
How long will the fitting take?
How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We make every part in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
Flats, conversions and lettings
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.
Under-stairs storage in Slade Green: local notes
In the streets around Slade Green, the largest groups of homes date from between 1973 and 1999 (about 27%) and the years since 2000 (about 27%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The centre of Slade Green is within about a quarter of a mile of the Oak Road Conservation Area. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If you live on or close to a main road in Slade Green, let us know at the measuring visit. We’ll plan where the van can stop.
Close to Braeburn Park? Under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. The wider area includes historic houses such as Hall Place and Gardens, about 2.1 miles south-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage.

From workshop to your room
Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. For a flat, building rules and lift booking are worth checking early; for a house, steps, paths and parking are the things to mention. Either way, the day is planned at the measuring visit. Saturdays can be arranged.
- It starts when you get in touch with a few details about the space, and whether the meters or fuse board are in there.
- We come to measure, note any meters or fuse boards and talk through the design, keeping the meters and fuse board easy to reach.
- You receive a quote in writing for the storage we have discussed, for you to read through.
- We make every part in our workshop, shaped to the angle of your stairs. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We bring it to your home, fit it and leave it ready to use. Any meters stay easy to reach.
Preparing the room
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
Getting a quote
We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.
Is it time for under-stairs storage?
Many people struggle with the shallow, sloping end under the bottom steps. You cannot stand up in it, and you cannot reach the back without kneeling. Drawers that slide out on runners turn that awkward corner into useful storage.
Common reasons to get in touch include:
- A hallway crowded with coats and shoes
- Open space under the stairs that collects clutter
- A fuse board that is hard to get to
- An under-stairs cupboard full of clutter
For a family home near St. Paul's (Slade Green) Church of England Primary School, under-stairs cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

Practical tips
The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:
- Tell us about parking at the design visit
- Clear the space before the design visit if you can
- Measure your vacuum cleaner and ironing board
- Check whether your meters or fuse board are under the stairs
Before we leave, we check every drawer and door with you. If there is a meter or fuse board, we make sure its door opens fully and the meter is easy to see. You will know everything works as planned.
Wet coats and shoes can mark paint and leave damp in a closed cupboard. It’s best to let them dry before closing the door on them, and leave the door open for a while after a wet day if the cupboard feels damp.
