About fitted wardrobes in DA8
Rooms under a slope are common in loft conversions and top-floor rooms. We can shape a wardrobe to follow the ceiling line, keeping long hanging where there’s height and drawers or shelves lower down. Space that’s hard to use otherwise becomes useful storage. Most enquiries start with empty alcoves in the bedroom and damp or musty clothes against an external wall; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and the fitting days are set out in your quote.
- You get in touch and tell us about the room.
- We come to measure and discuss the design, including the doors and the finish.
- Your written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
- The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then sprayed if you chose a spray finish.
- The wardrobes are fitted and scribed, with any hand painting done in the room.
- At the end we check each door and drawer with you; fresh paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.
How our quotes work
Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. It helps to talk about parking during the design visit.
Why choose Bespoke Carpentry
- Saturday visits and fitting by arrangement
- Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
- More than 300 projects completed
- A design visit, then a written quote
Starting with a design visit
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.
Near you in Erith
Our area takes in the homes around Wildspace Conservation Park, The Cross Keys pub and Christ Church (Erith) CofE Primary School and the streets around them. Nearby too are Erith School (within half a mile south-west), Trinity School (0.6 miles north-west) and Christ Church (close by, under half a mile east). Erith has its own railway station: Erith station. Well-known places in the area include Erith Museum (under half a mile east) and Broadway Shopping Centre (1.9 miles south-west).
Homes across DA8 and their bedrooms
Homes across DA8, Erith, Belvedere and Northumberland Heath among them, often have one bedroom that has to do two jobs. The design can help one room work two ways, keeping clothes, bedding and everything else out of sight.
About 24% of the homes in DA8 went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 24% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. About 41% of households in DA8 live in detached or semi-detached houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.
We work across all 32 London boroughs and the City of London, and DA8 is part of that. Every job starts the same way, with a design visit to measure and go through the design.
Erith: Hall Place and Gardens, about 2.3 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. If you live in a flat close to Erith station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Under a sloping ceiling, standard wardrobes leave most of the space unused. A fitted wardrobe can be shaped to the ceiling line, with hanging where it is tall and drawers or shelves where it’s low.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
- How doors and drawers are fitted
- Can you see real work of theirs?
- Whether they measure the room themselves
Flats, blocks and rented homes
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through.
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
Boards, parts and paint
Moisture-resistant MDF
Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well, which makes it ideal for wardrobe doors and visible panels. It is a sensible choice against a colder external wall.
Doors and drawer fronts
Drawer fronts can sit behind the doors or on the outside, depending on the look you prefer. Internal drawers keep a clean run of doors.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.
How we price fitted wardrobes
Several things affect the price:
- Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- The width and height of the space
The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.
Getting in touch
To help us picture the room, please include:
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Where you live, with the postcode
- Approximate measurements of the space
The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. A written quote follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, message us from the contact page.
FAQs: fitted wardrobes in DA8
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not usually. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
Can fitted wardrobes follow a sloping ceiling?
Yes. Sloping ceilings are common in loft conversions, and fitted wardrobes are one of the best ways to use them. We measure the slope carefully at the measuring visit and scribe the wardrobe to it.
Can fitted wardrobes go either side of the bed?
Yes. Building around the bed uses a wall that often goes unused. We measure the bed and the room during the design visit.
Can I choose the layout inside the wardrobe?
The inside is planned around your clothes. It can include long and double hanging, shelves, drawers and space for shoes, in the proportions you need. We talk it through at the measuring visit.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
What affects the price of fitted wardrobes?
Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how tricky the walls are all play a part. The written quote follows the design visit.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.
