About our fitted cupboards in South Harrow
The carcasses and doors are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, chosen for the job each part does. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits shelves and drawer boxes. The finish is either spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in the colour you choose. If your home has using the full height of a room and a linen cupboard on the landing, that’s what fitted cupboards are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
An interwar house normally has a proper landing, sometimes with a recess or an airing cupboard, which can hold fitted storage for linen and spare bedding. Around South Harrow, where interwar homes and semis are a big part of the housing, it is worth looking up as well as down. Any boiler or hot water cylinder keeps the access and ventilation its maker asks for.
Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

What it costs
There’s no set price, because there’s no set room. The things that affect it are:
- The number of doors and drawers
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- How big the furniture is
- Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.
Before the design visit
Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Any ideas or images you have saved
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, then send a written quote. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
A ready-made cupboard rarely suits a boiler or meter. The space needs to suit the boiler’s instructions and leave meters reachable, and a cupboard made for the spot can allow for them. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a bay, a box room or a bulkhead over the stairs, and those are common in interwar houses. Fitted furniture is made around them.
Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that’s part of the price. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.

Questions we’re often asked
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Is parking a problem for fitting in South Harrow?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us.
How do you get the furniture up the stairs?
The furniture is built in sections, sized for the route not just the room. At the design visit, we measure the route not just the room.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.
What materials do you use for fitted cupboards?
MDF for smooth painted parts and birch plywood for shelves and drawer boxes. The finish is spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in the colour agreed with you.

How fitting day works
You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. How long fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and your quote sets out the fitting days. It is useful to clear the room and the route before we arrive. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.
- It starts with a short note from you.
- At the design visit we measure at several points, as walls and floors in older homes are rarely flat or level.
- You receive a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
- We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- On fitting day each cupboard is set level on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the wall.
- The spray-painted or hand-painted finish completes the job, and new paintwork should be treated gently while it cures.
How to prepare
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
