How we make fitted cupboards for Northwick Park

A boiler cupboard needs more thought than most. The boiler maker’s instructions set out the clearances and ventilation it needs, and we design the cupboard to keep to them. Doors open wide enough for servicing, and any work on the boiler itself is for a Gas Safe engineer. Most enquiries start with landing shelves for bedding and towels and built-in storage that matches the woodwork, and the answer is built in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

In a home built since 2000, there are often spaces the builder left plain, like a recess, a landing corner or an empty cupboard. Many homes around Northwick Park date from 2000 onwards, so spaces like that are worth a second look. Drawers and shelves can make use of the full depth.

We write quotes in plain English. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Flat-pack cupboards can be put together quickly by a confident DIYer, and that’s a real advantage. A fitted cupboard needs a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, but it is built around your space. Large standalone pieces do not always fit the lift or the hallway, whereas fitted furniture is made in sections that fit. The sections are joined and fixed once inside.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.

Making use of tricky spaces in Northwick Park

Homes built since 2000 make up about 39% of the housing in the area around Northwick Park, with about 35% built between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for fitted cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Northwick Park include Parish Church of St Mary (Grade I), about 0.5 miles west, and The Old Schools (Grade I), about 0.6 miles west. If your own home is listed, internal works that affect its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. About 39% of homes in the neighbourhood around Northwick Park were built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Homes built since 2000 rarely have much storage, and they tend to have stud walls, so fitted cupboards are designed with fixings to suit.

Close to Preston Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place. For an older house near Saint Cuthberts Church, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep. For a flat near Kenton station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

When is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s easy to buy.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Fitting day, step by step

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a newer home, floors, walls and door frames are often freshly finished, so everything on the way in is covered before the sections arrive. Door frames and corners get covers too. Once inside, the pieces are joined in place.

  1. You get in touch and tell us where the cupboards should go.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and talk through doors, shelves and rails. For a boiler cupboard, we plan for the clearances and ventilation in the manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. Everything is built and finished in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The cupboards are fitted in your home and trimmed to follow the walls.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Arranging a design visit

Questions we’re often asked

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Northwick Park?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Do you fit out utility rooms and boot rooms?

Yes, we plan the room around what needs storing, from coats and boots to laundry and cleaning things. We’re carpenters, so plumbing and wiring are for your other trades.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

How much does a fitted cupboard cost?

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. The size, the inside layout and the finish all make a difference. For a design visit, use our contact form.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

What affects the cost of fitted cupboards

There’s no set price, because there’s no set room. What affects it comes down to:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • How big the furniture is
  • How square the room is
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. It is useful to talk about parking at the measuring visit, so it can be planned.

What to send when you get in touch

These details help when you contact us:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. A written quote follows the visit. To book one, use our contact form.
