Fitted cupboards in Greenhill: what you get

We make our cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, depending on what each part needs to do. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits shelves and drawer boxes. The finish is either spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in the colour you choose. People usually come to us about a linen cupboard on the landing and boxing in a boiler with room for servicing; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Floors in newer homes are often finished and easy to mark, so they’re protected while storage is fitted. Around Greenhill, many homes date from 2000 onwards, and stud walls there take fixings chosen for the board. The storage can sit on its own plinth or be scribed over the skirting.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

From workshop to your room

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fitting day starts by covering floors and setting out the sections. Each piece is levelled and fixed to suit plasterboard or block. Hand-painted finishes can be completed once the furniture is in.

  1. We start with a short note from you about the space and what it needs to hold. It might be a hallway, a landing, a utility or a boot room.
  2. We come to your home for a design visit, measure the space and go through the layout.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish, for you to read through.
  4. Everything is built and finished in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The cupboards are fitted in your home and trimmed to follow the walls.

Before fitting day

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Storage in Greenhill homes: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Greenhill were built since 2000 (about 45%) and before 1919 (about 22%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Greenhill is partly covered by a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. About 45% of homes around Greenhill were built since 2000, well above the figure for Harrow as a whole, about 15%, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Newer homes often have stud walls and compact rooms, so fixings and sizes are planned with that in mind.

If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St John the Baptist, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep. If your children go to Saint Jerome Church of England Bilingual School or a school nearby, fitted cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Granada Cinema, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

Common questions about fitted cupboards

I live in a flat in Greenhill. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do you make fitted cupboards for homes in Greenhill?

Yes. Greenhill is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Harrow and London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Do pictures help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.

How much does a fitted cupboard cost?

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The size, the inside layout and the finish all make a difference. To arrange a design visit, use our contact form.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Tips worth knowing

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Check stairs, landings and doorways for access
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Don’t store things against the boiler
  • Deal with any damp walls first

Your needs may change once the cupboards are in use. Where we have fitted adjustable shelves, you can move them as needed, so the space keeps working.

Before the design visit, think about what will go in each cupboard. Coats, shoes, cleaning things and bedding all need different depths and fittings, and knowing this early saves changes later.

What affects the cost of fitted cupboards

Several things affect the price:

  • How big the furniture is
  • Parking near your home
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • How square the room is

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that is part of the price. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.

Helping us understand the room

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Boards, parts and paint

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting suits doors and panels that you want to look crisp and even, and it’s done before the cupboards reach your home.

Moisture-resistant MDF

For painted doors and panels, moisture-resistant MDF is our usual choice, because it is stable and smooth.
