How fitting day works

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it sits neatly against the room. How long the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.

  1. You get in touch and describe the space.
  2. We visit to measure the space and the route in from the street, including the stairs and doorways.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. In our workshop we build the cupboards in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring the sections in and fit them, scribed to the walls.

Preparing the room

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Arranging a design visit

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we have measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, message us from the contact page.

Advice

Fitted cupboards in Roxeth: what you get

Boxing in a boiler is a job that needs care. The boiler maker’s instructions set out the clearances and ventilation it needs, and the cupboard is built to respect them. Doors open wide enough for servicing, and any work on the boiler itself is for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Most enquiries start with storage in a corner nothing else fits and tidying away the gas and electricity meters; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around Roxeth, many have had the loft converted, leaving low eaves and sloping ceilings. Those spaces, along with bays and hallways, are where fitted storage can add the most. We build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Storage in Roxeth homes: local notes

About 42% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Roxeth went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 19% before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for fitted cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Part of Roxeth is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your street in Roxeth joins a main road, it is worth telling us during the design visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

Close to Northwick Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place. If you live in a flat close to Sudbury Hill Harrow station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. Near listed buildings like The Old Schools, about 0.6 miles north-east of the centre of Roxeth, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

Roxeth is about 1 mile north of Harrow, in the London Borough of Harrow. Wherever you are in Roxeth, it works the same way: a design visit, a quote in writing, furniture made at our workshop and fitting in your home. In Harrow, Roxeth is one of the places we cover, and the borough has 20 places on our list.

Every home in HA2, HA1 and UB5 is covered for fitted cupboards. Streets in the area include Lower Road, Grange Road and Dudley Road, and we cover homes on all of them for fitted cupboards. Nearby, we also make fitted cupboards in South Harrow (1 mile south-west), Harrow (1 mile north), Harrow on the Hill (1 mile east), Northwick Park (1 mile north-east) and Rayners Lane (1 mile west). Across the rest of Harrow, our area takes in Stanmore (4 miles north-east), Hatch End (3 miles north-west), Harrow Weald (3 miles north), Wealdstone (2 miles north), Little Stanmore (4 miles north-east) and Pinner Green (3 miles north-west).

Flats, conversions and lettings

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising at the measuring visit.

Is bespoke worth it?

You can put together a flat-pack cupboard yourself, and that is a real advantage. A fitted cupboard needs a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, but it’s built around your space. Ready-made units come in standard depths that rarely suit every space, which may be too deep for one spot and too shallow for another. Fitted furniture is made to the depth the space can take.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that is part of the price. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.

When you need someone else

We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Relocating meters or the fuse board
  • Any gas work around the boiler
  • Wiring for lights or sockets

What affects the price in Roxeth

Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • How square the room is
  • The number of doors and drawers

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Helping us understand the room

Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:

  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, fill in our short enquiry form. You receive a written quote after the visit.

Questions from Roxeth

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Sudbury Hill Harrow station?

Yes, homes across Harrow and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Can you hide my gas and electricity meters?

Yes, and we keep them easy to reach. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so we design doors or removable panels for that.

How are fitted cupboards priced?

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Size, fittings and finish all affect the price. For a design visit, use our contact form.

Can you fit cupboards to walls that aren’t straight?

Yes, that’s part of the job. Walls in older homes are rarely flat and floors often slope, so every cupboard is scribed and levelled.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work.
