Making use of awkward spaces in Harrow

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 33% of the housing in the streets around Harrow, with about 27% built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted cupboards are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of Harrow, Historic England’s list includes Parish Church of St Mary (Grade I), about 0.6 miles east, and The Old Schools (Grade I), about 0.6 miles east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and the rest of London sets its own rules. If your road in Harrow falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Tell us what the parking is like at the measuring visit.

For an older house near Church of St Peter, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep. If you live in a flat close to Harrow-on-the-Hill station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it.

About our fitted cupboards in Harrow

Landings often have a corner or a stretch of wall that does nothing. A fitted cupboard there can hold towels, bedding and the things that never quite find a home, with shelves spaced to suit what goes on them. The doors are planned so they open cleanly on a narrow landing. Most enquiries start with tidying away the gas and electricity meters and boxing in a boiler with room for servicing; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

An interwar house tends to have truer walls than a Victorian one, though rarely square corners. Much of the housing around Harrow is interwar, semi-detached or detached, so we still scribe every piece to the wall. Lids, doors and drawers are set level on site so they run true.

The furniture is made in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

What happens on fitting day

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s usually only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. We start with the space and what you want to store, including anything tricky like a boiler or meter.
  2. We visit to measure and check how level the floor and walls are. Doors, shelves and rails are agreed then too.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish.
  4. We build the cupboards in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.

FAQs: fitted cupboards in Harrow

Is parking a problem for fitting in Harrow?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted cupboards fitted in Harrow?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you get in touch.

Can you fit cupboards to walls that are not straight?

Yes. Each cupboard is trimmed to the shape of the wall and levelled with a plinth or adjustable feet. It is one of the reasons fitted joinery suits period homes.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you send us a few details through our contact form.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

What affects the cost of fitted cupboards

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:

  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Parking near your home
  • The width and height of the space
  • The internal fittings

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Getting in touch

Ahead of the design visit, we will typically ask about:

  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we have measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, message us from the contact page.

Is bespoke worth it?

Flat-pack cupboards can be put together quickly by a confident DIYer, which is a fair point in their favour. Ours takes more planning: a design visit, a quote, making and fitting, and in return the cupboard is built for your home. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in a few set depths, so they can stick out too far or waste space behind. With fitted furniture, the depth is chosen for the room.

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, written once we’ve measured up.

Why people ask for fitted cupboards in Harrow

When a house gains a utility or boot room, people want it fitted out properly. There are appliances, coats, boots and cleaning things to fit in, and a run of fitted cupboards can hold them neatly.

Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:

  • A hallway cupboard for coats and shoes
  • Cupboards for a utility or boot room
  • Cupboards that suit a period house
  • A linen cupboard on the landing

If you live near Northwick Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
