The Wrythe Fitted Cupboards
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on fitted cupboards in The Wrythe starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.
- Tall cupboards where space is short
- Space for laundry, cleaning things and boots
- Hiding meters and a fuse board neatly
Fitted cupboards designed for your room
About our fitted cupboards in The Wrythe
Walls in period homes are rarely flat or square, and floors often slope. We scribe each cupboard to follow the wall, then set level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Skirting boards, picture rails and coving are cut around or met neatly, so the cupboard sits comfortably in the room. If your home has cupboards that suit a period house and storage for towels and bedding, fitted cupboards made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.
If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around The Wrythe, the hall is often wide enough for coat and shoe storage. Bay windows suit seating with drawers or lift-up lids, with a grille where there’s a radiator underneath. Each space is measured and fitted cupboards are made to suit it.
A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Fitting day, step by step
At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
- You let us know where the cupboards should go.
- At the design visit we measure at several points, as walls and floors in older homes are rarely flat or level.
- You receive a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
- The cupboards are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a little extra left on edges that meet the walls.
- We fit the cupboards and trim the edges to follow the walls and ceiling.
- Your finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site; go gently with it at first while it cures.
Before fitting day
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
Arranging a design visit
Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, and the written quote comes after. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

When you need someone else
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:
- Work on a boiler, which is for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register
- Relocating meters or the fuse board
- Making good walls after other work
Not sure whether your space suits fitted cupboards? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
Materials and parts
- Hand-painted finish
- Ventilated doors
- Adjustable shelves
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Spray-painted finish
- Birch plywood
Caring for painted furniture
Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:
- Tell us about parking at the design visit
- Don’t store things against the boiler
- Have damp sorted before fitting
- Think about how the cupboards will get in
We adjust the doors as part of the fitting. Timber and walls shift slightly through the year, so the hinges allow small adjustments later. If a door catches, it is normally a small hinge adjustment.
Keep boilers, meters and fuse boards in mind from the start. They affect where doors, panels and vents go, and it’s easiest to plan for them at the start.

What else we make in The Wrythe
The Wrythe homes and fitted cupboards
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around The Wrythe were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 40%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 21%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of The Wrythe include Bedford Cottage Woodcote House (Grade II), less than half a mile south-west, and Strawberry Lane Baptist Church (Grade II), under half a mile south-east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. More than a third of the homes in the neighbourhood around The Wrythe (about 40%) date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Interwar houses often have room in the hall and the box room for fitted cupboards.
If your children go to Victor Seymour Infants' School or a school nearby, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. The wider area includes historic houses such as Nonsuch Mansion, about 2.9 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, a shallow cupboard in a narrow hall can hold coats without blocking the way.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
FAQs: fitted cupboards in The Wrythe
Can you make fitted cupboards for a home in The Wrythe?
Yes. We cover all of Sutton and the rest of London, and The Wrythe is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.
Is parking a problem for fitting in The Wrythe?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Can you build a cupboard around a boiler?
Yes. The cupboard is built around the space and ventilation the boiler’s instructions ask for, with doors that open wide for servicing. Work on the boiler itself is a job for a Gas Safe engineer.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You do. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.
Will a fitted cupboard work on a sloping floor?
Yes. We scribe each cupboard to follow the wall and set it level on adjustable feet or a plinth. That’s one of the main reasons to choose fitted cupboards in an older house.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
The problems fitted cupboards solve
Alcoves and odd corners are another reason. We often build into recesses, corridor ends and corners that standard furniture can’t use, and make them useful.
Typical reasons people contact us include:
- A linen cupboard on the landing
- Built-in storage that matches the woodwork
- Using the full height of a room
- Cupboards for a utility or boot room
If you live in a flat close to Carshalton station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.
