Fitted wardrobes in The Wrythe

The Wrythe homes and fitted wardrobes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 40% of the housing in the streets around The Wrythe, with about 21% built between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of The Wrythe, Historic England’s list includes Bedford Cottage Woodcote House (Grade II), less than half a mile south-west, and Strawberry Lane Baptist Church (Grade II), under half a mile south-east. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, may need listed building consent from the council. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Terraced houses are home to about 30% of households in the streets around The Wrythe, based on Census 2021. Terraced houses often have a narrow back bedroom and alcoves either side of a chimney breast, both good spaces for fitted storage.

For a family home near Victor Seymour Infants' School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. Living in a block of flats near Carshalton station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Fitted wardrobes in The Wrythe: what you get

Rooms under a slope are common in loft conversions and top-floor rooms. A fitted wardrobe can follow the slope, with long hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers where it gets lower. It turns an tricky corner into storage. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about dusty space on top of the wardrobe and a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around The Wrythe, bedrooms are often straightforward shapes, sometimes with a chimney breast or a bay. Fitted furniture can run along the longest wall, with the inside arranged to suit you. Where a loft conversion has been added, the sloping ceiling can take storage too.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

What it is made from

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish often suits wardrobes in older houses. You choose the colour, and it’s easy to refresh in future.

Moisture-resistant MDF

With no grain to show through, MDF gives a calm painted finish. The moisture-resistant grade is our choice for fitted work.

How fitting day works

Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. It helps to clear the room and the route before we arrive. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You contact us with some details about the room and the wardrobes you’d like.
  2. We visit to measure up and plan the doors, rails, shelves and drawers with you.
  3. We send a written quote with the layout, materials and finish.
  4. The wardrobes are made in sections in our workshop. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the wardrobes go in, are levelled and scribed, and the doors are hung.

Preparing the room

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Starting with a design visit

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we have measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, use our contact form.

Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in The Wrythe

A spare room turning into a guest room or a child’s room is another reason. Fitted wardrobes give it proper storage without crowding the floor. Adjustable shelves let the inside change over time.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms
  • Too little room for clothes
  • No space in front for doors to swing
  • A bedroom that never feels tidy

Nonsuch Mansion, about 2.9 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

What to check before you book

  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

When you need someone else

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:

  • Structural changes to the room
  • Converting a loft (we build storage in lofts that are already converted)
  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we’ll give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

Is parking a problem for fitting in The Wrythe?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in The Wrythe?

Yes. We cover all of Sutton and the rest of London, and The Wrythe is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

Do you do the electrics?

No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Normally not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character may need listed building consent, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

Should I send pictures?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

The fitting depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The wardrobes are made at our workshop first before we come to fit them.

Caring for painted furniture

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Work out the split between long and short hanging
  • Check the route into your flat, not just the room
  • Check how much space there is in front for doors to open
  • Let us know which walls face outside

Do not pack clothes tight against the back panel where the wardrobe sits on an outside wall. A little airflow helps keep damp at bay.

Don’t overload a single rail or shelf. Rails and shelves are planned for normal use.
