TV and media units in The Wrythe

If the TV is wall-mounted, we plan the panels and shelves around the bracket position. If it stands on the unit, we size the top to suit, with the cables kept out of sight. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about standard units leaving gaps and somewhere to keep games tidy.

Ceilings in interwar houses tend to be lower than in Victorian ones, so TV and media units are proportioned to the room rather than copied from a taller one. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around The Wrythe, there may be little or no cornice, which lets the furniture run straight up to the ceiling. The skirting is scribed around neatly.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Do you need TV and media units in The Wrythe?

In an open-plan space, the TV wall is on show from everywhere. A built-in unit gives that wall order.

TV and media units can help with:

  • Clutter around the TV
  • Standard units leaving gaps
  • A screen at the wrong height
  • Set-top boxes stacked on a stand

If your home is one of the older houses near Bishop Andrewes Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

What to check before you book

  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • A written quote that sets out the job
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

When you need someone else

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. That means:

  • Setting up and tuning the TV, boxes and speakers
  • Repairing plaster or redecorating
  • Aerial, satellite or broadband installation

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

What it’s made from

  • Ventilated cabinets
  • Cable routes
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood

What it is made from

Doors and drawer fronts

Drawers keep controllers and games tidy close to hand. Fronts are painted to match the unit.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF has no grain to show through for a smooth finish. We use the moisture-resistant grade.

What happens on fitting day

At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and explain how to look after the paint. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in, and the sections are assembled in place.

  1. To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the TV wall and everything that plugs into it is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and plan cable routes and ventilation, as set-top boxes, consoles and amplifiers need air. If you need new sockets, your electrician should do that before fitting.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, leaving routes for cables and gaps for air.
  5. The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish and the routes left clear.

Preparing the room

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Arranging a design visit

If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, use our contact form.

Your questions about TV and media units in The Wrythe

Does a conservation area in or near The Wrythe affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in The Wrythe?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit.

Do you cover The Wrythe?

Yes. We design and make TV and media units for homes in The Wrythe.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

The furniture is built in sections, sized for the route not just the room. That is why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways during the design visit.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Living-room carpentry in The Wrythe: local notes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 40% of the housing in the area around The Wrythe, with about 21% built between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of The Wrythe include Bedford Cottage Woodcote House (Grade II), under half a mile south-west, and Strawberry Lane Baptist Church (Grade II), less than half a mile south-east. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, may need listed building consent from the council. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Terraced houses are home to about 30% of households in the streets around The Wrythe, according to Census 2021. Terraced houses in London often have alcoves beside a chimney breast, and TV and media units are made to those widths.

Nonsuch Mansion, about 2.9 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units. For a family home near Victor Seymour Infants' School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.

Pricing TV and media units in The Wrythe

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Parking near your home
  • The overall size of the piece

Rooms that are not square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote, written once we have measured up.

What to send when you get in touch

These details help when you get in touch:

  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing for you to look over. To arrange the visit, fill in our short enquiry form.
