What affects the price in Underhill
The price for your room depends on:
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- Parking near your home
We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Helping us understand the room
When you contact us, these help most:
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough sizes and some pictures if you have them. When you’re ready, get in touch through our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
Fitted cupboards for homes in Underhill
A boiler cupboard needs more thought than most. Every boiler comes with instructions on the space and ventilation around it, and we design the cupboard to keep to them. We make sure the doors open fully so the boiler can be serviced, and any work on the boiler itself is for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. If your home has storage for coats and shoes in the hallway and a neat cupboard around the boiler, that is what fitted cupboards are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Whether your home in Underhill is a period house, an interwar semi, a post-war flat or a newer build, there’s often a corner or recess not doing much. That space can take fitted storage, laid out for what you need to keep. Walls could be brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard, so we check before choosing fixings.
We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Looking after your furniture
Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:
- Treat new paintwork gently at first
- Deal with any damp walls first
- Leaseholders: check your lease first
- Tell us about parking during the design visit
We adjust the doors as part of the fitting. Timber and walls shift slightly through the year, so the hinges allow small adjustments later. A door that starts to rub can usually be set right at the hinge.
If there is damp on a wall, have it sorted before we fit. Damp behind a cupboard can lead to mould, particularly on a colder external wall. We can allow for ventilation where it’s needed.
Is bespoke worth it?
Boiler and meter cupboards are hard to get right with standard units. Clearances, ventilation and access all matter and fitted joinery can be designed around them. Standard widths and heights seldom suit an actual room, so it leaves gaps at the ends and empty space above. Fitted furniture is made to the room.
Tricky rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it.

How fitting works for fitted cupboards
You will not need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it’s useful to have the room cleared beforehand. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking varies a lot across London, from permit zones to private bays, so let us know what’s near you at the design visit. If you live in a flat, any lift or building rules are worth checking too.
- You let us know where the cupboards should go.
- At the design visit we measure at several points, as walls and floors in older homes are rarely flat or level.
- You receive a written quote covering the design, materials and finish.
- We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the cupboards and trim the edges to follow the walls and ceiling.
- Your finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site; go gently with it at first while it cures.
How to prepare
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Let us know about parking near your home
Getting a quote
Rough sizes are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

How it is made
Birch plywood
We use birch plywood where strength matters, which makes it good for shelves and drawer boxes. You can leave the layered edge on show or paint it.
Doors and drawer fronts
We make doors in a style that suits the room, painted to match the cupboard. Drawers can sit below for shoes or smaller things.
Questions we are often asked
Is parking a problem for fitting in Underhill?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Do you cover homes near New Barnet station?
Yes, homes across Barnet and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
How is the furniture painted?
You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
What do fitted cupboards cost?
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The size, the inside layout and the finish all make a difference. To arrange a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Usually not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent, so ask the council’s conservation officer.
Storage in Underhill homes: local notes
In the neighbourhood around Underhill, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 24%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 24%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. There are 13 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Underhill. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Barnet is inside it. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Underhill. Access and parking are talked through at the design visit.
For an older house near St John the Baptist Church, an old boiler or airing cupboard can be rebuilt with proper shelves. For a flat near New Barnet station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. Near listed buildings like Church of St John the Baptist, about 0.5 miles north-west of the centre of Underhill, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted cupboards can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
