About fitted wardrobes in E17

Fitted wardrobes are built to the room, from the floor to the ceiling and from wall to wall where the space allows. There is no dusty gap on top and no tricky space at the ends. For a bedroom in E17, the first step is a design visit to measure up and talk through the design. Most enquiries start with several odd pieces where one run of storage would do and damp or musty clothes against an external wall, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote.

  1. To begin, fill in our short enquiry form; a brief note on the bedroom and what you need to store is enough.
  2. We visit to measure up and work out the inside with you, from rail heights to drawer depths.
  3. The written quote sets out each wardrobe’s inside layout, the doors, the materials and the finish.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the rails, shelves and drawers you chose.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted in your home, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site, and the inside fittings go in last.

Homes across E17 and their bedrooms

E17 has bedrooms of every shape, from bay-fronted rooms in older houses to tight rooms in modern flats. Fitted wardrobes are drawn up to suit the room you actually have, with the inside laid out around what you keep.

Homes built before 1919 make up about 51% of the housing in E17, with about 18% built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. More than half of the homes in the E17 postcode district (about 51%) were built before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast and alcoves, which suit wardrobes built to their widths. Terraced houses are home to about 34% of households in E17, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. Terraced houses often have a narrow back bedroom and alcoves either side of a chimney breast, which suit fitted furniture.

We work across all 32 London boroughs and the City of London, and E17 is part of that. Every job starts the same way, with a design visit to measure and go through the design.

Walthamstow: Close to Lloyd Park? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. If your children go to Greenleaf Primary School or a school nearby, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

What prompts fitted wardrobes

Most people come to us because they’ve simply run out of space. Clothes end up on chairs, in boxes under the bed or in another room. Built-in wardrobes make use of the full wall, up to the ceiling, which adds a lot of space without taking more floor.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
  • Clothes with nowhere proper to go
  • A bedroom that never feels tidy
  • A sloping ceiling that’s hard to use

What we don’t do

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)
  • Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
  • Building work to create a loft room

Materials and finishes

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits wardrobe carcasses, shelves and drawers. You can paint the edge or leave the layers showing.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF in a moisture-resistant grade is stable and paints evenly, which makes it ideal for wardrobe doors and visible panels. It suits bedrooms where the wardrobe sits on an external wall.

Before and after fitting day

These points come up often when people plan fitted wardrobes. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:

  • Tell us about the lift and stairs in your block
  • Count how much long hanging and short hanging you need
  • Mention if the wardrobe will go on an external wall
  • Have sockets moved before the wardrobes go in

If you have sliding doors, keep the bottom track clear of dust and fluff. Clear anything that falls into it.

Close doors gently and do not let them swing into furniture. It helps the hinges and runners stay true.

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

Can wardrobes be fitted on an uneven floor?

Uneven floors are normal in older homes. The wardrobes are levelled on adjustable feet or a plinth and the doors line up.

How do I get a quote for fitted wardrobes in E17?

It is easiest to tell us about the room on our contact form and let us know about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a quote in writing.

Is it possible to build wardrobes into a loft room with a slope?

Yes. We shape the wardrobe to follow the slope, keeping hanging space at the tall end and drawers or shelves lower down. It makes good use of space that is hard to furnish.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.

Is it OK to put a wardrobe on an outside wall?

Yes. Wardrobes on outside walls are designed with ventilation behind and inside. If there’s damp on the wall already, it should be sorted first.

Can fitted wardrobes go either side of the bed?

Yes. Wardrobes can sit either side of the bed with a bridge of cupboards above. We plan it so the bed fits comfortably and the room still feels open.
