Fitted wardrobes in Bopeep

We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. Doors and panels are spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in the colour you choose. We then fit them in your home, setting them level on adjustable feet or a plinth. We make fitted wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about a room too narrow for hinged doors and condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall.

A bedroom in a house from between the wars typically has simpler mouldings than a Victorian one, which makes it simple to take fitted furniture up to the ceiling. Around Bopeep, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses are a big part of the housing, high cupboards make a good home for suitcases and spare bedding. The skirting is scribed around rather than removed.

The quote comes in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

What prompts fitted wardrobes in Bopeep

Couples often want storage that works for two. We can plan separate sections for each person.

People typically get in touch with us about needs like these:

  • Storage boxes stacked under the bed
  • Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall
  • Not enough hanging space
  • An awkward slope in a loft bedroom

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Maypole Cottages, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Real projects you can actually look at

Flats, conversions and lettings

If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We cannot advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Looking after your furniture

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • In a leasehold flat, read the lease first
  • Empty the area where we will be working
  • Check the route into your flat, not just the room
  • Plan any socket or switch changes with your electrician before fitting

Fill the rails gradually and spread the weight along them rather than packing one end. Heavy coats are best on a short rail or near a support, so the rail stays straight.

Avoid drying clothes in the bedroom where you can, as the extra moisture can lead to condensation. Opening a window now and then helps.

Questions we are often asked

I live near Knockholt station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Does a conservation area in or near Bopeep affect fitted furniture?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

What if my bedroom floor isn’t level?

Floors in older houses are often out of level. We set fitted wardrobes level on a plinth or adjustable feet.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.

How do I get started?

Simply drop us a line using the contact form. It helps to send rough measurements and a few pictures, and we’ll arrange a design visit, followed by a written quote.

How do you get fitted wardrobes into a flat?

Each wardrobe is built in sections that suit the stairs, landings and lift. Let us know about any concierge or lift booking rules.

What happens on fitting day

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so any section going up there is sized for them. Elsewhere in the house, the route is usually more generous. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. You contact us with some details about the room and the wardrobes you’d like.
  2. We visit to measure up and plan the doors, rails, shelves and drawers with you. Hinged or sliding doors are part of that conversation.
  3. We send a written quote with the layout, materials and finish, ready for you to read through.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop, in sections sized to get into your home.
  5. Fitting day: the wardrobes go in, are levelled and scribed, and the doors are hung.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Arranging a design visit

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit for you to look over. To arrange the visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

How it’s made

Moisture-resistant MDF

Tall doors need a stable material. MDF gives a flat, smooth surface that paints well, whether the doors are plain or panelled.

Spray-painted finish
