Fitted wardrobes in Chelsfield
A fitted wardrobe is built into the room itself, running floor to ceiling and wall to wall. There’s no dusty gap on top and no tricky space at the ends. For a bedroom in Chelsfield, the first step is a design visit to measure up and talk through the design. If your home has storage boxes stacked under the bed and gaps above and around standalone wardrobes, that’s what fitted wardrobes are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
A loft conversion is a common way to add a bedroom to a semi or an interwar house, and the slope can take storage cut to its angle. Around Chelsfield, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large part of the housing. Our part starts once the loft has been converted, with each piece scribed to the slope and set level.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

How fitting works for fitted wardrobes
When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop, one at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors are covered from the door to the room, and the sections are assembled in place.
- You describe the bedroom and the storage you need. A rough sketch of the room helps if you have one.
- A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with your clothes in mind.
- We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing.
- Once you are happy, the wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for spraying or for hand painting on site.
- The wardrobes are fitted in your home, ready to use.
Preparing the room
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
Getting a quote
It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, especially with rough measurements. To send them over, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Why bespoke in Chelsfield?
To be fair, modular wardrobe systems are easy to reconfigure. A bespoke interior is planned around your clothes from the start, and we can include adjustable shelves where you want flexibility. Standard widths rarely add up to the length of a real wall, which fitted furniture avoids. It can use the full height too.
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that’s part of the price. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

Questions we’re often asked
Does a conservation area in or near Chelsfield affect fitted furniture?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Chelsfield?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.
Do you cover areas outside London?
No. We only take on work in London.
How is the inside of the wardrobe planned?
It’s worked out with you when we measure, starting from the clothes you have. Adjustable shelves keep some flexibility for later.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Is it OK to put a wardrobe on an outside wall?
Yes, as long as it is ventilated. An outside wall is often colder than an inside one, so we allow for airflow behind and inside the wardrobe to help avoid condensation and mould.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Let us know about it when you contact us.
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.
Bedrooms in Chelsfield: local notes
Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 59% of the housing in the area around Chelsfield, with about 18% built between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Near the centre of Chelsfield, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Martin of Tours (Grade II*), less than half a mile south-west, and Crosshall (Grade II), under half a mile south-east. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If you live on or close to a main road in Chelsfield, let us know during the design visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.
For families living near Chelsfield Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller. If you live near Hewitt's Chalk Bank, fitted wardrobes are normally planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. Lullingstone Castle, about 3 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.
Chelsfield is in the London Borough of Bromley, about 2 miles north-west of Orpington. We cover Chelsfield as part of our work across Bromley, and the process is the same everywhere we work. Our Bromley coverage includes Chelsfield.

How we price fitted wardrobes
We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- How square the room is
- How big the furniture is
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.
Before the design visit
To give us a picture of the room, it is useful to include:
- Your postcode and the borough
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough sizes and some photos if you have them. When you are ready, drop us a line using the contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a written quote.
How it is made
Spray-painted finish
Spraying coats edges and corners evenly. The colour is agreed at the design stage.
Birch plywood
Shelves inside a wardrobe carry folded clothes, shoes and boxes. Birch plywood keeps them flat across wider sections.
