About our fitted wardrobes in Waltham Forest
Rail heights are set for the clothes they hold. A tall section suits long coats and dresses, while shirts, jackets and folded trousers suit two rails, one above the other. We plan for the people using it too, so the top rail is within comfortable reach. We make fitted wardrobes from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are a tight bedroom where doors get in the way and dusty space on top of the wardrobe.
A loft conversion is a common way to add a bedroom to a semi or an interwar house, and that slope can be used for storage built to the angle. Around Waltham Forest, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large part of the housing. We work in lofts that are already converted, and the furniture is scribed to the slope and the walls.
The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the fitted wardrobe we’ve designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished, and the workshop works from it.

How it is made
Moisture-resistant MDF
Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well, so we use it for doors, end panels and the faces you see. It suits bedrooms where the wardrobe sits on an external wall.
Doors and drawer fronts
Door styles range from simple flat fronts to panelled ones. They’re painted to match or contrast with the walls.

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Waltham Forest
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Waltham Forest?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit.
Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in Waltham Forest?
Yes, Waltham Forest is within the area we cover, which takes in all of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, followed by a quote.
Can fitted wardrobes go on an external wall?
Yes. We plan ventilation behind and inside wardrobes on external walls, in moisture-resistant MDF. Any existing damp needs dealing with before fitting.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so ask the council’s conservation officer.
Should I choose hinged or sliding wardrobe doors?
The space in front of the wardrobe normally decides it. If a bed or a door is close, sliding doors can make more sense, while hinged doors suit rooms with space to open them. We will look at the room with you at the measuring visit.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You do. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.
Bedroom storage in Waltham Forest
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Waltham Forest were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 39%) and before 1919 (about 23%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of Waltham Forest, Historic England’s list includes Queen Elizabeth's Hunting Lodge (Grade II*), less than half a mile west, and Church of St John the Baptist (Grade II), about 0.6 miles south-east. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features such as panelling can need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your home in Waltham Forest is on or near a main road, tell us at the design visit. We will plan where the van can stop.
Living in a block of flats near Chingford station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. For a family home near Normanhurst School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.

How fitting day works
You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. It helps to clear the room and the route before we arrive. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.
- It starts when you let us know about the room, the floor it’s on and the wardrobes you want.
- We visit to measure the room and talk through the design, and we measure the stairs, landings and doorways too. Tell us about parking as well, as a van usually needs a permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension in much of London.
- A quote in writing follows with the design, materials and finish.
- The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route we measured.
- Fitting day: the sections come in, are joined and set level, and the doors are hung.
How to prepare
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Empty the space we will be working in
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
Getting a quote
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, fill in our short enquiry form.
Advice
Is it time for fitted wardrobes?
Sometimes it’s a change in how a room is used. Built-in storage makes the room work for its new role without crowding the floor. Inside, the layout can change as needs change.
We’re often asked to help with:
- Several odd pieces where one run of storage would do
- Wardrobes that are full to bursting
- Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall
- Standard wardrobes that do not fill the wall
If you live near Linder's Field, keeping fitted wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright.
Choosing a carpenter
- Will the quote be in writing?
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
- Have they thought about parking near you?
Flats, blocks and rented homes
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it’s worth raising at the measuring visit.
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s easy to buy.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
