  • Several odd pieces where one run of storage would do
  • Storage boxes stacked under the bed

Monkhams homes and fitted wardrobes

Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 33% of the housing in the streets around Monkhams, with about 31% built between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. There are 9 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Monkhams. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If you live on or close to a main road in Monkhams, let us know at the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

If your children go to Wells Primary School or a school nearby, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. If your home is one of the older houses near All Saints' Church, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. If you live near The Highams Park, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window.

Monkhams is about 1 mile south of Woodford, part of the London Borough of Redbridge. We design and make fitted wardrobes for homes in Monkhams and across Redbridge, as part of our work in every London borough. We cover places right across Redbridge, large and small.

We cover every part of IG8, IG9 and E4 for fitted wardrobes. Whether you live on a street such as Oak Lane, Wood Lane and Mill Lane or on one nearby, we can visit to measure up for fitted wardrobes. Main roads around Monkhams include the A121. If your home is on one of them, tell us at the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. Nearby, we also make fitted wardrobes in Woodford Wells (1 mile east), Friday Hill (1 mile west), Woodford (1 mile south), Chingford Hatch (1 mile west) and Waltham Forest (1 mile north). Other parts of Redbridge we cover include Ilford (4 miles south-east), Loxford (5 miles south-east), Wanstead (3 miles south), South Woodford (2 miles south), Newbury Park (4 miles south-east) and Gants Hill (3 miles south-east).

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Monkhams

Some bedrooms suit wardrobes that wrap around the bed, with tall cupboards either side and storage bridging over the headboard. Others work around a window, sometimes with a dressing table or a window seat between them. We plan the layout so the room still feels open. Most enquiries start with empty alcoves in the bedroom and condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Monkhams, the third bedroom is often small, sitting over the stairs. Small rooms like that suit fitted wardrobes, whether the room is a guest room, a dressing room or a study. Every wall is measured and checked, even in a house that looks square.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?

Walls and floors in older homes are seldom straight or level. A standalone wardrobe can lean, rock or show tapering gaps. Ours are levelled on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls. If a house has been extended or knocked through, the new walls and the old ones may not line up, which shows up against standard furniture. Built-in pieces are scribed to take up the difference.

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

What you get with us

  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
  • Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home
  • Made for your room, not a standard size
  • Every London borough and the City of London covered

What it is made from

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish often suits wardrobes in older houses. The colour is agreed with you, and touch-ups are straightforward.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is stiff and grips screws firmly, which suits wardrobe carcasses, shelves and drawers. You can paint the edge or leave the layers showing.

Before and after fitting day

People planning fitted wardrobes often ask about these. They help before and after fitting:

  • Decide what goes on shelves and what goes in drawers
  • Look at how many long coats and dresses you have
  • Empty the area where we will be working
  • For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift

Once clothes go in and the wardrobes are in daily use, doors may settle slightly. Most hinges can be adjusted to bring a door back in line, and sliding doors can be reset on their track.

Close doors gently and don’t let them swing into furniture. It keeps hinges and runners in adjustment longer.

From workshop to your room

In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it looks as though it was always there. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You get in touch about fitted wardrobes for your bedroom, with a rough idea of what you need to hang and fold.
  2. We visit to measure up and plan the doors, rails, shelves and drawers with you. Hinged or sliding doors are part of that conversation.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the design and the paint finish, ready for you to read through.
  4. The wardrobes are made in sections in our workshop. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribe them to the walls and hang the doors. The rails, shelves and drawers go in last.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

Questions we are often asked

I live near Highams Park station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Redbridge and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Monkhams?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Can wardrobes be fitted on an uneven floor?

Floors in older houses are often out of level. We set fitted wardrobes level on a plinth or adjustable feet.

Can you build wardrobes around a bed?

Yes. Storage around a bed makes good use of a wall that is often wasted, with wardrobes at the sides and cupboards overhead. We measure the bed and the room at the measuring visit.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

How much will my fitted wardrobe cost?

Each room is quoted on its own: size, internal fittings, the finish and how awkward the walls are all play a part. The written quote follows the design visit.

What fitted wardrobes cannot fix

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Building work to create a loft room
  • Treating damp or mould on the walls
  • Taking out a chimney breast to make space

If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.
