About our fitted wardrobes in Woodford Wells

Wardrobes can be built around a bed, with tall cupboards either side and storage bridging over the headboard. In other rooms, the units sit either side of a window. We plan the layout so the room still feels open. If you are living with empty alcoves in the bedroom and a bedroom that never feels tidy, fitted wardrobes made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

Around Woodford Wells, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the box room over the stairs is a classic spot for fitted furniture, and the bulkhead is built around rather than ignored. The main bedroom may have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

How fitting day works

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors are covered from the door to the room, and the sections are assembled in place.

  1. You contact us with some details about the room and the wardrobes you’d like, with a rough idea of what you need to hang and fold.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the room, check the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the doors and inside with you. Hinged or sliding doors are part of that conversation.
  3. We send a written quote with the layout, materials and finish.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop, in sections sized to get into your home.
  5. Fitting day: the wardrobes go in, are levelled and scribed, and the doors are hung.

Before fitting day

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

How to get a quote

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Honest limits

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)
  • Taking out a chimney breast to make space
  • Converting a loft (we build storage in lofts that are already converted)

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Materials and finishes

Moisture-resistant MDF

Tall doors need a stable material. MDF stays flat and gives a smooth surface for painting.

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, which gives large doors a smooth, even surface. It works on plain and panelled doors alike.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so each section is sized to get through.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

Woodford Wells homes and fitted wardrobes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Woodford Wells were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 40%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 28%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Woodford Wells include Church of All Saints' (Grade II), under half a mile west, and Main Quadrangle (Grade II), about 0.5 miles north-west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features such as panelling can need listed building consent. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Redbridge sets its own rules. Where a street in Woodford Wells is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. Parking near your home is worth mentioning during the design visit.

For a family home near Wells Primary School, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. For an older house near All Saints' Church, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. If you live near The Highams Park, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they won’t shade the window.

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Woodford Wells

Do you make fitted wardrobes for homes in Woodford Wells?

Yes. Woodford Wells is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Redbridge and London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Does a conservation area in or near Woodford Wells affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Can I choose the layout inside the wardrobe?

You choose the mix of hanging, shelves and drawers. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves, drawers and shoe space can all be included. We plan it with you when we visit.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

Is it OK to put a wardrobe on an outside wall?

Yes, with ventilation planned in. An outside wall is often colder than an inside one, so we plan airflow behind and within it to help avoid condensation and mould.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Caring for painted furniture

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall beforehand
  • Look at how many long coats and dresses you have
  • Tell us about the lift and stairs in your block
  • Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations

Do not pack clothes tight against the back panel. A little airflow helps keep damp at bay.

Close doors gently and don’t let them swing into furniture. It keeps hinges and runners in adjustment longer.
