Fitted wardrobes for your home in Bakers Arms
About our fitted wardrobes in Bakers Arms
Rail heights are set for the clothes they hold. A tall section suits long coats and dresses, while two rails, one over the other, suit shirts and jackets. We also think about who uses it. People normally come to us about dusty space on top of the wardrobe and damp or musty clothes against an external wall; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Older bedrooms normally have generous ceiling heights, and a large share of the homes around Bakers Arms date from then. Fitted furniture can run right up to the ceiling or the cornice, with high storage for the things you use least. Picture rails, skirting boards and coving are met neatly or cut around.
A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It describes the fitted wardrobe we have designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

What it’s made from
Hanging rails
Rails are placed so the top one is within easy reach without a step. Shelves above the rails hold things used less often.
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting lets you judge the colour in the room. Joins and scribed edges are painted in the same coats.

Flats, leases and landlords
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall.
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, after measuring the route at the design visit.
Questions we’re often asked
My house in Bakers Arms is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in Bakers Arms?
Yes. Bakers Arms is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Waltham Forest and London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
How much will my fitted wardrobe cost?
Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it. The price comes in a quote in writing after the design visit.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too.
What can go inside a fitted wardrobe?
It is worked out with you when we measure, based on what you wear and how much of it there is. Some shelves can be adjustable so the layout can change.
Can fitted wardrobes follow a sloping ceiling?
Yes. Many loft rooms have sloping ceilings. We measure the slope carefully during the design visit and scribe the wardrobe to it.
What we do not do
Not everything around fitted wardrobes is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:
- Removing walls, chimney breasts or any structural work
- Treating damp or mould on the walls
- Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.
What goes into it
- Birch plywood
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
- Hand-painted finish
- Spray-painted finish
- Hinged or sliding doors
What happens on fitting day
On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through.
- You describe the bedroom and the storage you need.
- A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with your clothes in mind.
- We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing. It lists what’s inside each wardrobe as well as the doors.
- Once you’re happy, the wardrobes are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We bring them to your home and fit them in place.
How to prepare
- Empty the space we will be working in
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
Getting a quote
It’s useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space. To share them, message us from the contact page, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

What prompts fitted wardrobes in Bakers Arms
Others simply want the room to feel calmer. A single run of painted doors looks tidier than mixed furniture and keeps everything out of sight.
These come up often when people first get in touch:
- No space in front for doors to swing
- Storage boxes stacked under the bed
- Mismatched bedroom furniture
- Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes
If your children go to Thomas Gamuel Primary School or a school nearby, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
Bakers Arms homes and fitted wardrobes
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Bakers Arms were built before 1919 (about 61%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 11%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Within a mile of the centre of Bakers Arms, 4 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Around Bakers Arms, about 61% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for Waltham Forest as a whole, about 45%, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That makes period details like uneven walls, alcoves and picture rails more likely to shape the design.
Near listed buildings like Church of St Barnabas and St James the Greater, less than half a mile west of the centre of Bakers Arms, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. The wider area includes historic houses like Sutton House, about 2.5 miles south-west. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.
Bakers Arms is within the London Borough of Waltham Forest, about 1 mile north-west of Walthamstow. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Bakers Arms is part of that. Our work takes in places right across Waltham Forest, large and small.
