Fitted home offices in Aperfield

A good home office has a place for everything. Drawers for stationery, cupboards for files and a printer, and shelves for books and folders, so the work surface stays clear. Doors keep clutter out of sight at the end of the day. We design the storage around your work, wherever you are in Aperfield. If your home has a tangle of chargers and leads and glare from a window on the screen, home offices made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

A bay in an interwar house makes a bright spot for a built-in desk, with shelving or cupboards along the walls beside it. Much of the housing around Aperfield is interwar, semi-detached or detached. A desk can follow the shape of the bay or bridge its opening, with a grille if there’s a radiator below.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

What it is made from

Birch plywood

Its layered build gives birch plywood its strength. We use it for desk tops, carcasses and drawer boxes, with the edge either shown or painted.

Moisture-resistant MDF

We use moisture-resistant MDF because it is stable and gives a smooth surface for paint. It suits doors, drawer fronts and panels, where a smooth, even finish matters.

Fitted home offices in Aperfield: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Aperfield were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 29%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 25%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Aperfield include St Mark's Church (Grade II), about 0.5 miles north-west. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Bromley is inside it. Vans bringing furniture to Aperfield fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. Parking and access are planned at the design visit.

For a family home near Biggin Hill Primary School, closed cupboards above a desk keep work papers and school books apart. Down House, about 1.7 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a small back bedroom can become a home office with a desk under the window. Living in a block of flats near Oxted station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Structural work, such as removing walls or chimney breasts
  • Connecting printers and screens
  • Making good the walls, which is for a plasterer or decorator

How fitting day works

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors are covered from the door to the room, and the sections are assembled in place.

  1. It starts when you contact us about a home office.
  2. We visit to measure and talk about the equipment you use, and plan where the cables will run.
  3. A written quote follows, with the fitting days agreed. You can ask us about any part of it.
  4. We make the desk, shelves and cupboards in our workshop.
  5. The office is fitted and set level, ready for your first day at the desk, with the cable routes left open.

Before we arrive

FAQs: fitted home offices in Aperfield

Can you make fitted home offices for a home in Aperfield?

Yes, Aperfield is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Bromley and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Aperfield?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

It is made in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. At the design visit, we measure the route along with the room itself.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us, and we will see what we can do.

What materials do you use for home offices?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the desk, shelves and drawers, while the doors and panels are MDF, which paints well. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Caring for painted furniture

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Check whether you will need new sockets
  • Estimate the shelf space you will need
  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
  • Decide how much should be open shelving and how much behind doors

Once the fitting is done, your office is ready to use. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat the new finish gently at first. A desk mat helps protect the new paint while it settles.

Use a mat or coasters on the desk for hot drinks. Keep liquids away from the edge. A mat protects the area you use most.
