Fitted home offices in Plaistow: what you get

Spare rooms are a natural choice for an office, though many still need space for guests. The office can be planned to leave space for a bed or a sofa, or with doors that close over the desk when you finish work. We will look at how the room is used when we visit in Plaistow. Typical reasons to get in touch are a screen that’s hard to read by the window and no proper place to work from home, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Around Plaistow, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, a dining room or spare bedroom is often the room that has to double as an office. Cupboards that close over the desk let the room switch back when you have finished. We plan the cable routes around your sockets.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

Boards, parts and paint

Moisture-resistant MDF

Because it cuts cleanly, MDF suits panels and angled pieces. The grade we use is moisture-resistant and paints well. It makes up most of the visible parts.

Shelves

Shelves in a home office carry books, files and folders. Span, depth and load all matter. Each shelf is made to stay straight under what you plan to store.

What fitted home offices can’t fix

We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Connecting printers and screens
  • Structural work, like removing walls or chimney breasts
  • Turning an unconverted loft into a room

If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

What goes into it

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Built-in desks
  • Cable routes
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Filing drawers
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood

Before and after fitting day

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
  • List the equipment you use, from screens to printers
  • Measure your chair and how much room you need behind it
  • Note how many files and books you need to store

Once the fitting is done, your office is ready to use. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat the new finish gently at first. A desk mat helps protect the new paint while it settles.

Keep heavy loads on the shelves meant for them. Shelves are made for the load you planned. Keep the weight spread along the shelf.

What happens on fitting day

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. How long fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are usually straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. First we hear about your work and the room you have in mind, whether that’s a spare room, an alcove or a landing.
  2. At the design visit, the room is measured and the layout planned. Cable routes are planned at this point.
  3. We agree the desk, shelving and storage, and send a written quote.
  4. Every part is built in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
  5. The office is fitted, scribed to the walls and checked with you. The cable routes are left ready to use.

Preparing the room

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Questions we are often asked

I live near Sundridge Park station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do you make fitted home offices for homes in Plaistow?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London, and Plaistow is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

What are your built-in desks made from?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the desk, shelves and drawers, while the doors and panels are MDF, which paints well. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

It’s made in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. At the design visit, we measure the route as well as the room.

Can a home office double as a guest room?

That depends on the space you have. An office on one wall often leaves room for a bed. At the design visit, we will suggest what works.

What affects the price in Plaistow

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. These are the things that affect it:

  • Parking near your home
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Spray painting or hand painting

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.

What we need to know

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Any ideas or images you have saved

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit for you to look over. To book one, fill in our short enquiry form.
