Our fitted home offices across Bromley
In a period room, an alcove is often the right size for a compact desk. The desk and shelves are scribed to the alcove, as period walls are seldom flat. The opposite alcove can carry shelves or a cupboard to match. It makes a working corner that suits the room, in Bromley or anywhere else. We make home offices from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are no way to put work away and cables trailing across the desk and floor.
Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
- You get in touch with some details about the room and the home it is in.
- At the design visit we plan the office and measure the route in: stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways.
- We send a written quote.
- The desk and shelving are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route.
- We carry the sections in, assemble them in the room and fit them, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
How our quotes work
How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.
Why work with us

How to get a quote
It’s useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough sizes. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we’ll arrange a design visit.
Around Orpington
Our area takes in the homes around St Andrew's, Jubilee Country Park and The Priory School, among other places. You’ll also find Perry Hall Primary School (under half a mile west), The Royal Albert pub (close by, under half a mile east) and Harris Academy Orpington (0.8 miles south-east). The nearest railway station is St Mary Cray station, about 0.7 miles north of the centre. Well-known places in the area include London Borough of Bromley Museum (within half a mile south) and Orpington Hospital (1.5 miles south). Not far away are The Warren.
Built-in desks and shelving across Bromley
Period homes in Bromley often have alcoves just wide enough for a desk, while newer flats nearby suit a desk along one wall of a spare room. The design visit is where we compare the options.
About 30% of the homes in Bromley went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 27% between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for home offices, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Around a third of the homes in Bromley (about 30%) date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs that suits a built-in desk. About 27% of homes in Bromley were built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Rooms from that era suit a full-width desk with shelving above, fixed to suit the wall.
We cover the whole of London, so homes in Bromley are well within our area. If you’re unsure about access or parking, mention it when you contact us.
Orpington: If your home is one of the older houses near St Andrew's, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk. If you live in a flat close to St Mary Cray station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.
Flats, conversions and lettings
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
What it costs
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- How square the room is
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- How big the furniture is
In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Tell us about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.
Before the design visit
Some details help us understand the job before we visit. It’s useful to include:
- Approximate measurements of the space
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Examples of the look you’re after
The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To book one, get in touch through our contact form.
What prompts fitted home offices
Keeping work in its own space is a common wish. A desk with doors, or an office in a spare room, lets you close the door on work. It makes the house feel like home again in the evening.
If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:
- An alcove or landing that could take a desk
- Glare from a window on the screen
- Wires with no tidy route
- A desk buried under papers
Practical tips
Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:
- Decide how much should be open shelving and how much behind doors
- Look at the window and where the light falls
- Let us know about parking near your home
- Note the position of sockets in the room
A hand-painted finish is easy to touch up if it gets marked. It’s worth keeping a record of the paint colour. Should you have a question about the office, drop us a line using the contact form and we will help.
Every so often, look at the handles and hinges. Tightening early stops a small looseness getting worse. If something stops working smoothly, get in touch through our contact form and describe it.
Is bespoke worth it?
Off-the-shelf desks leave you to work out the cables. With a bespoke desk, cable routes are part of the design. That keeps the desk and the floor tidy.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Real projects you can actually look at
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
Questions from Bromley
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
Is the furniture made to order?
It is made in our workshop, to the sizes taken at the design visit. After that, we fit it in your home.
How long will the home office fitting take?
How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The office is made at our workshop first, so the time in your home is spent fitting. We keep the room as tidy as possible while we work.
Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?
Possibly. Leases vary, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. We cannot give advice on your lease, so it is worth checking before fitting day.
Can you fit a desk under a sloping ceiling?
Yes, if the loft is already a converted room. Headroom is the main thing to plan around, so the desk sits where you can stand up. Shelving and cupboards can fill the lower space under the slope.
Can you fit sockets in the desk?
That’s work for your electrician. We plan the furniture around them, with cable routes through the desk and units. They can then be fitted where we have allowed for them.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
