Loft storage for homes in Aperfield

A loft room can hold a great deal of storage, if the low spaces are used well. We design and make eaves cupboards, drawers in the knee walls, wardrobes under the slopes and shelves in dormers, all made for the shape of the room. In Aperfield, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. People typically come to us about nowhere to store bags and boxes and standard furniture that won’t go up the loft stairs, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Coats, shoes, bags and the vacuum cleaner all need somewhere to go in a family house. Around Aperfield, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses make up a big part of the housing, well-planned storage by the door or under the stairs can take a lot of it. Meters and fuse boards stay easy to reach.

The quote comes in writing, so there’s time to read it properly. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Flats, conversions and lettings

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check at the design visit.

Looking after your furniture

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Plan where the tall end of a wardrobe can go
  • Empty the eaves so we can see what’s behind
  • Decide whether you’d prefer drawers, cupboards or both
  • Note any vents or insulation in the eaves

Small marks on a hand-painted finish can be touched in. Keep a note of the colour for later. If anything is not right with the storage, send us a few details through our contact form and we will talk it through.

Leave room for air to move behind the storage. Squashed insulation works less well. If you notice damp or condensation behind the eaves, ask whoever converted the loft.

Questions we’re often asked

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Oxted station?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Is Aperfield in the area you cover for loft storage?

Yes. Aperfield is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Bromley and London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details.

How long will the loft storage fitting take?

The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a written quote.

Fitted storage in Aperfield

Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 29% of the housing in the streets around Aperfield, with about 25% built between 1973 and 1999, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. About 29% of homes in the neighbourhood around Aperfield were built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Where a post-war house has had its loft converted, the eaves and slopes can take fitted storage.

Down House, about 1.7 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards. If you live in a flat close to Oxted station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If your children go to Biggin Hill Primary School or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

What it is made from

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting gives a slightly softer look than spraying. It’s done on site, in the colour you choose. It can match the skirting and doors.

Pull-out drawers

Drawers along the knee wall make a neat, low run of storage. The top can act as a shelf. The design visit settles the mix.

Fitting day, step by step

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the loft and the stairs up to it.
  2. At the design visit we plan the storage and measure the stairs, landings and loft doorway.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. We build the storage in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized to get up to the loft.
  5. We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to fit.

How to prepare

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Getting a quote

We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To book a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

What affects the cost of loft storage

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • The overall size of the piece
  • Parking near your home
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish

Tricky rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote.

Helping us understand the room

Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:

  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Any ideas or images you have saved

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.
