Flats, conversions and lettings

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t give advice on leases.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

Landings and the space under the eaves can also take a desk. Under a slope, the desk is placed where there is headroom to sit and stand. On a landing, the furniture must leave a clear way past. We measure and plan for the space you have in Castle Green. We make home offices from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are work things on show in the evening and files and folders piling up.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Castle Green, if the loft has been converted, the space under the eaves can take a desk and storage. For lofts, we work in rooms already converted or boarded. Or a desk can sit in an alcove or a bay.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

What affects the cost of fitted home offices

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. These are the things that affect it:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • The internal fittings

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

What we need to know

A few details help us understand the job before we visit. When you get in touch, it is useful to send:

  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

For a quote for fitted home offices in Castle Green, tell us about the room on our contact form. Let us know which room it is and roughly what you have in mind, with sizes if you have them. We will arrange a design visit, then send a written quote.

Fitted home offices in Castle Green: local notes

About 55% of the homes in the area around Castle Green went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 22% since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Barking and Dagenham are set locally. Where a street in Castle Green is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. Parking near your home is worth mentioning during the design visit. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Barking and Dagenham included. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Castle Green. Parking and access are planned at the design visit.

For an older house near St John the Divine, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk. For families living near Jo Richardson Community School, a desk with shelves and closed storage can serve both work and homework. If you live near Mayesbrook Park, a desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight.

Questions from Castle Green

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Castle Green?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Barking Riverside station?

Yes. We cover all of Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Can you fit sockets in the desk?

That’s work for your electrician. The furniture is designed to suit, with routes for chargers and screens. Your electrician can then fit them as planned.

What we don’t do

Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we do not do:

  • Setting up computers, screens or networks
  • Painting the walls and ceiling
  • Converting a loft to make room for an office

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Materials and finishes

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish works well on every part of the office. We do it in our workshop, where the finish can be kept even. The colour is your choice.

Doors and drawer fronts

Cupboard doors hide the clutter of working life. They can be plain or panelled, with handles chosen to suit the room. When you finish, the doors close on work.

How fitting works for fitted home offices

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. It helps to clear the room and the route before we arrive. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You get in touch and describe the space you want to work in.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and plan a desk and storage that follow the shape of the room.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. In our workshop the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angles we measured.
  5. We fit the office in your home, trimming the edges to follow the walls and ceiling.
  6. The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once everything is in.

Before fitting day

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
