Under-stairs storage designed for your room
How it is made
Plinths and scribe strips
Walls are rarely flat and floors rarely level, in older homes particularly. We use scribe strips at the walls and a plinth at the floor to take up the difference. The result is neat, even lines all round.
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish can be applied once the storage is in place. Marks can be touched in without much trouble. Like any new paint, it needs time to cure fully.
About our under-stairs storage in Castle Green
Under-stairs storage isn’t only for houses. Maisonettes, split-level flats and homes with stairs down to a lower floor often have usable space beneath the steps. The parts we make in our workshop are sized to get through the doors and hallways on the way in. Wherever your home is in Castle Green, the process is the same. We make under-stairs cupboards from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are cleaning things with no proper home and a fuse board that’s hard to get to.
In a family house, the hall and stairs normally carry the most clutter. Around Castle Green, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses make up a big part of the housing, fitted storage near the front door can take much of it. Meters and fuse boards stay easy to reach.
We write quotes in plain English. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Questions from Castle Green
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Barking Riverside station?
Yes, homes across Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Do you make under-stairs storage for homes in Castle Green?
Yes, Castle Green is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.
Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?
Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them, message us from the contact page.
Could the space under my stairs take a desk?
In many homes it is possible, if the space is open to a room and tall enough at one end. We can build a desk with shelves and drawers to suit the space. Any socket or light there is for your electrician, and we plan around it.
Is it possible to match the colour of my hallway?
Yes. You choose the colour, and we agree it before the work starts. A spray-painted finish is done in our workshop, and a hand-painted one can be done on site. Both can be matched to a colour you already have.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you get in touch.
Looking after your furniture
Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:
- Note the things that need a home under the stairs
- Let us know about parking near your home
- Measure your vacuum cleaner and ironing board
- Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
Once the fitting is done, the storage is ready to use. New paintwork takes time to cure fully, so go easy on it to begin with. Keep tape, sharp knocks and strong cleaners away from it while it settles.
Damp coats and shoes put moisture into a closed space. It is best to let them dry before closing the door on them, and air the cupboard if it feels damp.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.

When you need someone else
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:
- Electrical work under the stairs, which your electrician carries out
- Gas pipework, which needs a Gas Safe engineer
- Moving a gas or electricity meter, which is arranged through your energy supplier

Fitting day, step by step
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- To begin, message us from the contact page; a brief note on the space and what it holds now is plenty.
- At the design visit we measure the space and plan the storage around the meters, so readers and engineers can still reach them.
- You receive a written quote for the storage.
- The storage is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with access to the meters planned in.
- We fit it in your home, scribed to the stairs and the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Before fitting day
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
How to get a quote
The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing. To arrange the visit, use our contact form.
Advice
Making use of awkward spaces in Castle Green
About 55% of the homes in the area around Castle Green went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 22% since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for under-stairs cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If your home is on or just off a main road, it is useful to mention it. We can then plan where the van will stop. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and Barking and Dagenham is no exception. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. We ask about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Close to Mayesbrook Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place. If your children go to Jo Richardson Community School or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. For an older house near St John the Divine, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight.
