How we make fitted home offices for Norbiton

Where the window sits affects how comfortable the desk will be. A screen facing a window can be hard to read, and a window behind you can cause glare. We will suggest where the desk should go to make the most of daylight without glare. We look at it early at the measuring visit in Norbiton. If you are living with a corner too odd for a standard desk and a guest room that’s needed for work, home offices made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

Some people work from home every day, while others need a desk now and then. For a home in Norbiton, full-time use might call for a full wall of desk and storage, and part-time use for a compact desk that closes away. That is part of the conversation at the design visit.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

What it costs

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:

  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • How big the furniture is

We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote. To arrange a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

What to send when you get in touch

Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:

  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit

It is useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them over, send us a few details through our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Norbiton homes and fitted home offices

In the neighbourhood around Norbiton, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 24%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 22%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. There are 10 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Norbiton. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Kingston upon Thames included. Vans bringing furniture to Norbiton fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. We plan parking and access with you at the design visit.

Near listed buildings like Lovekyn Chapel, about 0.6 miles west of the centre of Norbiton, older homes may keep original joinery that home offices can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. If you live in a period home close to Church of St Peter, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk.

Your questions about fitted home offices in Norbiton

Do you make fitted home offices for homes in Norbiton?

Yes, we work across Kingston upon Thames, Norbiton included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Norbiton?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.

What happens when you come to measure?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a written quote.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

That’s normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

Why people ask for fitted home offices in Norbiton

A spare room that has to do two jobs is another reason. Fitted furniture can make room for both. It makes the most of a room that is only sometimes used for guests.

Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:

  • A guest room that is needed for work
  • Working at the kitchen table
  • Cables trailing across the desk and floor
  • A screen that is hard to read by the window

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Can you see real work of theirs?

Is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf desks and shelving are made for flat walls and standard sizes. In an alcove, a landing or under the eaves, that leaves gaps and wasted space. A fitted home office is designed for the room and scribed to the walls. It costs more than flat-pack furniture, and what you get is an office that fits. Walls and floors are seldom perfectly flat in any home, and standalone units show it with gaps and wobbles. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.

Why us?

From workshop to your room

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop, one at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, each piece is fitted to the room’s own walls, scribed where walls bow and levelled where floors slope. Hand painting can happen on site, while spray-painted pieces come ready from the workshop.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the room and the home it’s in.
  2. At the design visit we plan the office and measure the route in: stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. We build the office in our workshop, in sections, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The sections are brought in, joined and scribed to the walls, ready for work.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Ask for a quote

To get a quote, fill in our short enquiry form and let us know which room you have in mind and what you want the furniture to do. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.

Advice

Flats, blocks and rented homes

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check during the design visit.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them during the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.
