About our fitted home offices in Kingston upon Thames

Each home office is made in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives the desk and shelving their strength, and MDF gives the doors and panels a smooth surface for paint. It is then spray-painted or hand-painted and fitted in your home in Kingston upon Thames. If your home has paperwork and files with nowhere to go and a corner too odd for a standard desk, home offices made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Where housing is mixed, as in much of London, the room that becomes an office varies a lot: a spare bedroom, a corner of the living room, a landing or the space under the stairs. Home offices are made for whichever you have in Kingston upon Thames, painted in a colour agreed with you.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

What it costs

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The overall size of the piece
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Getting in touch

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • How you want to use the space
  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • Where you live, with the postcode

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing for you to look over. To arrange the visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

What prompts fitted home offices in Kingston upon Thames

Cables and chargers are a common frustration. Planned routes through the desk keep cables out of sight. New sockets are for your electrician, and the furniture is planned to suit.

People normally get in touch with us about things like these:

  • Glare from a window on the screen
  • Files and folders piling up
  • Shelves that sag under books and files
  • An alcove or landing that could take a desk

For a family home near St Luke's CofE Primary School, closed cupboards above a desk keep work papers and school books apart.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • How they handle walls that are not straight

Built-in desks and shelving in Kingston upon Thames

About 36% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Kingston upon Thames went up before 1919, and about 21% between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for home offices, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. 15 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Kingston upon Thames. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Kingston upon Thames. Parking and access are planned at the design visit.

Close to Canbury Gardens? A desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight. The wider area includes historic houses such as Hampton Court Palace, about 1.8 miles south-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an tricky room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot give advice on leases.

Your questions about fitted home offices in Kingston upon Thames

How do you fit fitted home offices in a flat in Kingston upon Thames?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Home offices are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Kingston upon Thames?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Can the spare room be an office and a guest room?

In many rooms, yes. The desk, shelving and storage can be designed to leave room for a bed, or with doors that hide the desk away. A fold-down wall bed can also be built into the design.

From workshop to your room

On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop. How long the fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. For a flat, building rules and lift booking are worth checking early; if you live in a house, let us know about steps, paths and parking. We plan the details of the day during the design visit. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. It starts with a short note from you about the space.
  2. We visit to measure the room and the way in, and discuss the design.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. The desk and shelving are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route.
  5. We carry the sections in, assemble them in the room and fit them, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
