FAQs: fitted home offices in Kenley

Is Kenley in the area you cover for fitted home offices?

Yes, we work across Croydon, Kenley included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Kenley station?

Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

What finishes do you offer?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

What does a built-in desk cost?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. It depends on how much furniture you want, the layout and the finish. To get a quote, fill in our short enquiry form and we will arrange a design visit.

Can a home office go in a loft room?

Yes, where the loft has already been converted. We place the desk so you can sit and stand without hitting the slope, with storage built into the lower parts of the slope. The conversion itself is not our work.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

That’s normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

Fitted home offices in Kenley: what you get

In a period room, an alcove is often the right size for a compact desk. We scribe the desk and shelving to the alcove walls, which are rarely straight. The other alcove can hold matching cupboards or bookshelves. It makes a working corner that suits the room, in Kenley or anywhere else. People normally come to us about files and folders piling up and no proper place to work from home; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

The bay window in a 1930s front room or bedroom gives good daylight for a desk, with shelving or cupboards along the walls beside it. Much of the housing around Kenley is interwar, semi-detached or detached. A desk can follow the shape of the bay or bridge its opening.

The furniture is made in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Where other trades come in

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:

  • New sockets, data points or wiring, which are for your electrician
  • Installing IT equipment or broadband
  • Structural work, such as removing walls or chimney breasts

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

What it is made from

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Filing drawers
  • Birch plywood
  • Built-in desks
  • Cable routes
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

From workshop to your room

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. To begin, use our contact form; a brief note on the room and your desk set-up is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure and plan the desk, shelves and storage, and look at where the light falls.
  3. You receive a written quote for the office.
  4. The office furniture is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with gaps for cables planned in.
  5. The desk and shelves are fitted, with the cable routes ready for your equipment.

Preparing the room

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

How to get a quote

It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

How it is made

Shelves

Shelves in a home office carry books, files and folders. How far a shelf spans and what it holds both count. We size each shelf to carry its load without sagging.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is made in layers, which makes it strong and stable. We use it for desk tops, carcasses and drawer boxes, with the edge either shown or painted.

Fitted home offices in Kenley: local notes

In the neighbourhood around Kenley, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 32%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 31%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of Kenley, Historic England’s list includes Church of All Saints (Grade II), under half a mile south-west, and Kenley Station House (original 1856 Building) (Grade II), less than half a mile west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling can require listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. About 31% of homes in the neighbourhood around Kenley were built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Post-war rooms are usually regular in shape, so a desk and shelving can run wall to wall, fixed to suit the wall.

Living in a block of flats near Kenley station? Then it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. If you live near Dollypers Hill, a desk placed to make the most of daylight makes a big difference to a working day. If your children go to Harris Primary Academy Kenley or a school nearby, a built-in desk can be shared between home working and homework.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, after measuring the route at the measuring visit.

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

With ready-made furniture, the colour is the maker’s choice. We paint the office in the colour you choose, so it can match the room or the woodwork. Walls in interwar houses are straighter than in older ones, but rarely perfect, so standalone furniture can still lean or leave gaps. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that is part of the price. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.
