Practical tips

Getting the most from fitted home offices starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Check whether you will need new sockets
  • Think about what will sit on the shelves
  • List the equipment you use, from screens to printers
  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls

Any sockets or wiring are for your electrician, and the furniture leaves room for them. It helps if they know where the cable routes are. Keeping cables in their routes keeps the desk tidy.

Check now and then that handles and hinges are tight. A loose screw is easy to tighten before it works loose. If a door drops or a drawer catches, message us from the contact page and tell us.

How we make fitted home offices for Coulsdon

Spare rooms are a natural choice for an office, though many still need space for guests. The office can be planned to leave space for a bed or a sofa, or doors that close over the desk at the end of the day. We will look at how the room is used when we visit in Coulsdon. Most enquiries start with a corner too odd for a standard desk and a screen that’s hard to read by the window, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

A good part of the housing around Coulsdon is interwar, semi-detached or detached. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the box room over the stairs is a classic home office, with a bulkhead in the floor that the desk can be built around. Shelving, a desk and closed storage can all fit a room like that.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Is bespoke worth it?

Ready-made office furniture comes in set sizes for straight walls. In an awkward space, standard pieces leave gaps. A fitted home office is designed for the room and scribed to the walls. It is a bigger investment, and the gain is a workspace that uses the room well. If a house has been extended or knocked through, the new walls and the old ones may not line up, which shows up against standard furniture. Built-in pieces are scribed to take up the difference.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.

Flats, leases and landlords

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Your questions about fitted home offices in Coulsdon

Do you cover homes near Coulsdon South station?

Yes, homes across Croydon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Coulsdon?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so it sits tight to the room.

What materials do you use for home offices?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The desk, shelves and drawer boxes are birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well, and MDF takes paint well for the doors and panels. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. Your lease is something we cannot advise on, so it’s worth checking before fitting day.

What happens on fitting day

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so any section going up there is sized for them. The main stairs in houses of that age are normally straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. You tell us how you work and where you’d like the office.
  2. We measure the room, look at the light and note the sockets.
  3. We agree the desk, shelving and storage, and send a written quote.
  4. The office is made at our workshop and painted in your colour.
  5. The office is fitted, scribed to the walls and checked with you.

Before fitting day

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

How to get a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.

Why people ask for fitted home offices in Coulsdon

Keeping work in its own space is a common wish. With doors over the desk, work can be put away at the end of the day. It helps the home feel restful after hours.

People normally get in touch with us about things like these:

  • Files and folders piling up
  • A guest room that is needed for work
  • Cables trailing across the desk and floor
  • A screen that’s hard to read by the window

For an older house near St Andrew's Church, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk.
