Fitted Home Offices in Wanstead
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make fitted home offices for homes in Wanstead, each designed at a visit to your home.
- A screen that is hard to read by the window
- Shelves that sag under books and files
- A desk buried under papers

Honest limits
Some parts of a job need another trade, like an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here’s what to know:
- Plastering and decorating around the office
- Changes to the structure of the house
- Turning an unconverted loft into a room
If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.
What it’s made from

- Moisture-resistant MDF

Fitted home offices in Wanstead
Landings and the space under the eaves can also take a desk. Under a slope, the desk is placed where there is headroom to sit and stand. On a landing, the furniture must leave a clear way past. At the design visit in Wanstead, we’ll see what fits. We make home offices from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are wanting to close the door on work at the end of the day and a tangle of chargers and leads.
A bay in an interwar house makes a bright spot for a built-in desk, and storage can run along the walls either side. Much of the housing around Wanstead is interwar, semi-detached or detached. A desk can follow the shape of the bay or bridge its opening.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

How it’s made
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is made in layers, which makes it strong and stable. We use it for desk tops, carcasses and drawer boxes, with the edge either shown or painted.
Spray-painted finish
Spray painting gives the desk and doors a very even surface. It’s applied in our workshop, and the paint needs time to cure fully once fitted.
Questions we are often asked
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Leytonstone High Road station?
Yes, homes across Redbridge and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room.
Does a conservation area in or near Wanstead affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
Can you build a home office in an alcove?
Often, yes. A desk with shelving over it can fit neatly in an alcove. It is scribed to the alcove walls so it fits closely. We will check the size at the design visit.
What happens when you come to measure?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too.
Can you add power points to the desk?
Sockets and wiring are for your electrician, not us. The desk is planned with routes for cables and space for any sockets. It is useful to agree the positions at the measuring visit.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

From workshop to your room
With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. The time the fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- You get in touch and tell us about the work you do and the equipment you use.
- At the design visit we measure the room, agree the desk height and depth and plan cable routes to the sockets.
- You receive a quote in writing for the office.
- We make the desk and storage in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable holes and routes built in.

Arranging a design visit
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.
If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
Working from home in Wanstead
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 33% of the housing in the streets around Wanstead, with about 28% built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how home offices are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Wanstead include Church of St Mary (Grade I), about 0.5 miles south, and Christ Church (Grade II*), less than half a mile west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Around a third of the homes in the neighbourhood around Wanstead (about 33%) date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs that suits a built-in desk, built around the bulkhead.
Close to Valentines Park? A desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight. Valentines Mansion, about 1.6 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk. If your home is one of the older houses near Wanstead United Reformed Church, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk.
