Fitted cupboards in Wanstead

Hallways in London homes are often long and narrow, so every cupboard needs to be worth the room it takes. A shallow cupboard can hold coats, shoes and bags without blocking the way, fitted out with a rail, hooks or shelves. Some people like a low bench with storage beneath, so there’s somewhere to sit by the door. If your home has space for laundry, cleaning things and boots and a linen cupboard on the landing, that’s what fitted cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

An interwar house typically has a proper landing, sometimes with a recess or an airing cupboard, and that space can take shallow fitted storage. Around Wanstead, where interwar homes and semis are a big part of the housing, the landing is worth a look as well as the hall. If a boiler or cylinder sits there, it keeps its clearances and access.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Could you do it yourself?

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Storage in Wanstead homes: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Wanstead were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 33%) and before 1919 (about 28%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for fitted cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. 5 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Wanstead. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. About 33% of homes in the streets around Wanstead date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Interwar houses often have room in the hall and the box room for fitted cupboards.

Valentines Mansion, about 1.6 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size. Close to Valentines Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place.

Common questions about fitted cupboards

Does a conservation area in or near Wanstead affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Wanstead?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, but it helps to be around at the end.

How are fitted cupboards priced?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The size, the inside layout and the finish all make a difference. For a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Is it possible to build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes. We design the cupboard to keep the clearances and ventilation set out in the boiler maker’s instructions, with doors that open wide for servicing. Work on the boiler itself is a job for a Gas Safe registered engineer.

What happens when you come to measure?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Do you need fitted cupboards in Wanstead?

Standard cupboards do not sit well in many period homes. Sloping floors, walls that lean and odd alcove widths leave gaps and wasted space above. A built-in cupboard follows the room instead.

Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:

  • Tall cupboards where space is short
  • Making use of an tricky alcove or corner
  • Boxing in a boiler with room for servicing
  • A cupboard for the meters with easy access

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Mary, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • How they handle walls that are not straight
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure

Caring for painted furniture

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Let us know how parking works on your street
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Do not store things against the boiler
  • Measure the route into the room along with the room itself

If a hand-painted door gets a knock, it can normally be touched in. Spray-painted finishes are smooth and even, and small marks can often be cleaned off with a soft cloth. It is worth keeping a record of the colour.

Any damp should be dealt with before furniture goes against a wall. A cupboard on a damp wall can trap moisture, particularly on a colder external wall. We can allow for ventilation where it is needed.

What happens on fitting day

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so it is worth mentioning at the measuring visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. We start with a short note from you about the space and what it needs to hold. It might be a hallway, a landing, a utility or a boot room.
  2. We come to your home for a design visit, measure the space and talk through the layout.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the carcasses, doors and shelves in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring the cupboards to your home and fit them to the space. We check each door and shelf with you before we leave.

How to prepare

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Flats, conversions and lettings

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you get in touch.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so each section is sized to get through.
