Common questions about fitted home offices

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Barking station?

Yes, homes across Redbridge and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Loxford?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

Is an alcove big enough for a desk?

In many homes, yes. A desk with shelving over it can fit neatly in an alcove. We scribe it to the walls, which are rarely straight in a period room. We will check the size during the design visit.

What materials do you use for home offices?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Long shelves are sized to carry books and files without sagging. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you’ve chosen.

Fitted home offices for homes in Loxford

Light matters in a home office. Glare from a window can make a screen tiring to use. We plan the desk position with the window in mind, often with the light to one side. We look at it early at the design visit in Loxford. We make home offices from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the things people most often want solved are shelving that bows under the load and a desk buried under papers.

A good home office needs light, a comfortable desk height and somewhere to put things away. Whatever kind of home you have in Loxford, we plan those first. The desk depth and the height of the shelves are set to suit you.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Fitting day, step by step

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. It helps to clear the room and the route in before fitting day, including anything on the walls near the work. Floors and doorways are protected before anything comes in. Sections are then carried in and assembled.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the room.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the room, the window and your equipment, and plan where the cables will run.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish. You can ask us about any part of it.
  4. Your office furniture is built in our workshop, sized for the room.
  5. The office is fitted and set level, ready for your first day at the desk, with the cable routes left open.

Preparing the room

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Tell us about parking near your home

Getting a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing. To arrange the visit, use our contact form.

What prompts fitted home offices in Loxford

Many people get in touch because they now work from home, at least part of the week. The kitchen table works for a while, then it doesn’t. A built-in desk and storage make working at home far easier.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • Working at the kitchen table
  • A desk buried under papers
  • Cables trailing across the desk and floor
  • A spare room that has to be an office and a guest room

If you live near Loxford Park, a desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

How to choose a carpenter in London

Why bespoke in Loxford?

Off-the-shelf desks and shelving are made for flat walls and standard sizes. In an tricky space, standard pieces leave gaps. Bespoke furniture is made to the room and fits it. It costs more than flat-pack furniture, and what you get is an office that fits. Ready-made pieces come with a fixed inside layout, which may not suit what you need to store. With fitted furniture, the inside is planned around what you keep.

Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

Why choose us

  • Built in our workshop and fitted in your home
  • 300+ projects completed
  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
  • Saturday work by prior arrangement

Tips worth knowing

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Think about glare on your screen
  • Think about the space you need to push back
  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
  • Think about what will sit on the shelves

Load shelves evenly, with heavier books and files at the ends near the supports. That keeps shelves straight over the years. We size them for what you told us you’d store.

Keep heavy loads on the shelves meant for them. Shelves are made for the load you planned. Spread heavy books and files evenly.

Materials and finishes

Hand-painted finish

Some people prefer a hand-painted finish for its softer look. It’s done on site, in the colour you choose. It can match the skirting and doors.

Doors and drawer fronts

Some home offices have doors that close over the whole desk. It’s useful where the room has other jobs too. The design visit is where we agree the doors.
