Making use of tricky spaces in Wanstead

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Wanstead were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 33%) and before 1919 (about 28%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Within a mile of the centre of Wanstead, 5 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Redbridge sets its own rules. If your road in Wanstead falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

For an older house near Wanstead United Reformed Church, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage. The wider area includes historic houses like Valentines Mansion, about 1.6 miles east. If your own home is a period one, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Mary, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Under-stairs storage for homes in Wanstead

Deep pull-out drawers bring the back of the space within reach. Rather than reaching into the dark, you pull the drawer towards you and see what’s inside. At the tall end, a cupboard works well for coats, an ironing board or the vacuum. A mix of drawers and cupboards is often the best use of the space. We make under-stairs cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter and storage that doesn’t match the hallway.

Coats, shoes, bags and the vacuum cleaner all need somewhere to go in a family house. With interwar houses, semis and detached homes a large part of the housing around Wanstead, well-planned storage by the door or under the stairs can take a lot of it. Anything that needs to stay reachable, like meters or a fuse board, is designed around.

A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish.

What we don’t do

We design, make and fit the furniture. In practice, that means:

  • Electrical work under the stairs, which your electrician carries out
  • Altering or cutting into the stairs
  • Moving gas pipes under the stairs

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Pull-out drawers
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Coat hooks and shoe shelves

Flats, leases and landlords

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Questions from Wanstead

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Leytonstone High Road station?

Yes, homes across Redbridge and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Wanstead?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

Can the under-stairs storage be painted to match the hall?

Yes. You choose the colour, and we agree it before the work starts. A spray-painted finish is done in our workshop, and a hand-painted one can be done on site. Both can be matched to a colour you already have.

How long is the fitting for under-stairs storage?

How long fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The storage is made in our workshop first, so the time in your home is spent fitting. We know the hall is a busy route, so we keep it as clear as possible.

Which materials go into your under-stairs cupboards?

Our storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. Birch plywood holds screws well, which matters for drawers that carry weight. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.

Is it possible to fit storage around a meter under the stairs?

Yes. It’s common to find a meter or fuse board under the stairs, and access has to be kept. We note them during the design visit and plan the drawers and doors around them. We don’t move meters, so the storage works around their current position.

Fitting day, step by step

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You contact us about the space under your stairs.
  2. At the design visit we measure the underside of the stairs and the floor, then talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage.
  3. We send a written quote for the storage.
  4. In our workshop we build every part from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the slope we measured.
  5. We fit the storage in your home, trimming the edges so they meet the stairs neatly. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand once it’s in.

Preparing the room

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Ask for a quote

Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a quote in writing.

Pricing under-stairs storage in Wanstead

There is no set price, because there’s no set room. What affects it comes down to:

  • The internal fittings
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • The overall size of the piece
  • How many doors and drawers there are

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that’s part of the price. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.

What to send when you get in touch

Some details help us understand the job before we visit. When you contact us, it helps to send:

  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • How you want to use the space
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner

To make a start, drop us a line using the contact form and tell us which room you have in mind and roughly what you’d like. We then arrange a design visit to measure and go through the design, and a written quote follows.
