Wanstead Fitted Wardrobes

Floor-to-ceiling wardrobes built to the shape of your bedroom, for homes in Wanstead. We measure, design and quote first, then make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • Standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall
  • Space under the eaves going to waste
  • A tight bedroom where doors get in the way

Fitted wardrobes designed for your room

Fitting day, step by step

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop, one at a time. How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors are covered from the door to the room, and the sections are assembled in place.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the room and the wardrobes you have in mind, including any slopes, windows or alcoves.
  2. We visit to measure the room and go through the design. We also look at the way in, in case the sections need to go up narrow stairs.
  3. You receive a quote in writing setting out the wardrobes, doors and finish, so you can see what’s included.
  4. We make the carcasses, doors and drawers in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit them in your home, levelled and scribed to the walls. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.

Preparing the room

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Starting with a design visit

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Fitted wardrobes in Wanstead: what you get

You can choose hinged or sliding doors. Hinged doors open a whole section at once, though they need room in front to open. Sliding doors suit tighter rooms, although only part of the wardrobe is open at a time. We weigh them up with you at the measuring visit. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the things people most often want solved are wasted space beside the chimney breast and condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall.

Around Wanstead, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. Many 1930s houses have a small box room over the stairs, often with a raised bulkhead in the floor, and the bulkhead is built around rather than ignored. The main bedroom may have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in Wanstead

Does a conservation area in or near Wanstead affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Wanstead?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Can you fit wardrobes in a top-floor flat?

The wardrobes are made in sections sized to get up the stairs, into the lift and through the doors. We measure the stairs, landings and lift as well as the bedroom. In a leasehold flat, it’s worth checking the lease first.

Can fitted wardrobes follow a sloping ceiling?

Yes. Sloping ceilings are common in loft conversions. We measure the slope carefully at the design visit and scribe the wardrobe to it.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough sizes. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Can I choose the layout inside the wardrobe?

You choose the mix of hanging, shelves and drawers. It can include long and double hanging, shelves, drawers and space for shoes. We plan it with you when we visit.

What it’s made from

Hanging rails

We place rails at the heights your clothes need: a high rail for long items and double rails for shorter ones.

Birch plywood

Drawers get heavy use, so we often make the boxes from birch plywood, so they hold their shape.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Bedroom storage in Wanstead

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Wanstead were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 33%) and before 1919 (about 28%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. There are 29 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Wanstead. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Wanstead is covered by it. We go through parking and access at the design visit.

The wider area includes historic houses like Valentines Mansion, about 1.6 miles east. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. For a family home near Wanstead Church School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. If you live in a period home close to Wanstead United Reformed Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

Where other trades come in

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Building work to create a loft room
  • Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster
  • Removing walls, chimney breasts or any structural work

What affects the price in Wanstead

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. These are the things that affect it:

  • The width and height of the space
  • How square the room is
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Helping us understand the room

To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:

  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
