Fitted home offices in Ilford
About our fitted home offices in Ilford
A good home office has a place for everything. We can plan drawers, file storage, a cupboard for the printer and shelving, so the work surface stays clear. Doors keep clutter out of sight at the end of the day. We design the storage around your work, wherever you are in Ilford. Most enquiries start with a spare room that has to be an office and a guest room and wires with no tidy route, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
A large share of the homes around Ilford were built before 1919, and Victorian and Edwardian rooms typically have a chimney breast with an alcove each side. A desk can sit in an alcove, with shelving above and a cupboard below, which keeps work in its own corner of the room. The pieces are scribed to walls that wander and levelled on floors that slope.
Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

When you need someone else
Not everything around fitted home offices is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:
- Turning an unconverted loft into a room
- New sockets, data points or wiring, which are for your electrician
- Plastering and decorating around the office
If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

Flats, leases and landlords
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Let us know about it when you contact us.
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We cannot give advice on leases.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
With ready-made furniture, the colour is the maker’s choice. Ours is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you, so it can match the room or the woodwork. Tall standalone furniture needs fixing back to the wall so it can’t tip, and in an older house that can mean fixing into brick or lath and plaster. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.
Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that’s part of the price. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

Your questions about fitted home offices in Ilford
Do you make fitted home offices for homes in Ilford?
Yes, Ilford is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Redbridge and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
My home in Ilford is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?
Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
Can I send photos ahead of the visit?
Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. You can send them when you message us from the contact page.
How long will the home office fitting take?
The time the fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We make the desk and storage in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
How is a home office priced?
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. The size of the room, the amount of desk, shelving and storage, and the finish all shape the price. To get a quote, send us a few details through our contact form and we will arrange a design visit.
Does my lease affect fitted furniture?
Possibly. Leases vary, and some need consent for alterations. We can’t give advice on your lease, so check it or ask your managing agent.
From workshop to your room
On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop, one at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.
- You let us know how you work and where you’d like the office.
- At the design visit, the room is measured and the layout planned.
- The design is agreed and a written quote follows, with the finish set out.
- The office is made at our workshop and painted in your colour.
- The office is fitted, scribed to the walls and checked with you.

- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

It is useful to let us know about parking at the design visit.
If you live in a period home close to St Alban's Church, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk. Near listed buildings like Chapel, less than half a mile south-west of the centre of Ilford, older homes may keep original joinery that home offices can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. Close to South Park? A desk placed to make the most of daylight makes a big difference to a working day.
