Mitcham Bespoke Kitchens

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make bespoke kitchens for homes in Mitcham, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • A painted kitchen in a colour you choose
  • A central island in a larger kitchen
  • Spaces sized for your oven and fridge

Caring for painted furniture

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Deal with damp walls first
  • Give the paint time to cure fully
  • Choose your appliances before the design is final
  • Think about how the cabinets will get in

Wipe up spills and splashes promptly, particularly near the sink. Moisture-resistant MDF copes well, but standing water is best avoided.

Choose your appliances before the design is finalised. We size the spaces around them, so late changes can be awkward.

About our bespoke kitchens in Mitcham

A bespoke kitchen is built around the room you have. Every unit is sized from careful measurements taken during the design visit, so there are no filler panels covering awkward gaps. You decide the layout, the storage and the colour with us, and the kitchen is made in our workshop before it’s fitted. People normally come to us about a layout for a small or awkward room and a kitchen that fits an uneven room; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Around Mitcham, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the walls are often straighter than in a Victorian house, but they’re still measured carefully. Each cabinet is levelled and scribed on site. Gas work is for a Gas Safe registered engineer, and the plumbing and electrics are for your plumber and electrician.

A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish.

How fitting works for bespoke kitchens

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors are covered from the door to the room.

  1. You let us know about the kitchen and where it is in your home.
  2. At the design visit we measure the kitchen and the route in, including stairs, doorways and any lift. Let us know about parking too, as a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinets are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized to come in through your doors.
  5. The cabinets are fitted in your home with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish; plumbing, gas and electrics are for your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician.

Before fitting day

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Advice

Could you do it yourself?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

What we do not do

Some parts of a job need another trade, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Moving water or waste pipes
  • Knocking through or rebuilding walls
  • Making good walls and ceilings

FAQs: bespoke kitchens in Mitcham

Can you make bespoke kitchens for a home in Mitcham?

Yes, we work across Merton, Mitcham included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details.

I live near Mitcham Eastfields station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Merton and the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not typically. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. We cannot give advice on your lease, so it is worth checking before fitting day.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

We plan the route in at the measuring visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

Bespoke kitchens for homes in Mitcham

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Mitcham were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 49%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 14%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for kitchens, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. All of London, Merton included, is inside the ULEZ. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Mitcham, as it does anywhere else in London. How the van gets to your door is planned during the design visit.

For a family home near St Thomas of Canterbury Catholic Primary School, a drawer set aside for lunch boxes and water bottles keeps mornings calmer. Close to Cranmer Green? A tall cupboard for outdoor things can be part of the kitchen design. For a flat near Mitcham Eastfields station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

How it’s made

Moisture-resistant MDF

For painted cabinet fronts, moisture-resistant MDF is our usual choice, because it stays flat.

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, giving a smooth, even surface.
