Fitted Cupboards in Mitcham

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make fitted cupboards for homes in Mitcham, each designed at a visit to your home.

Fitted cupboards in Mitcham

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

Fitted cupboards in Mitcham: what you get

Few walls in an older house are truly straight, and floors and ceilings can be out of level too. We scribe each cupboard to follow the wall, then set level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Skirting boards, picture rails and coving are cut around or met neatly, so the cupboard looks as if it has always been there. If your home has a hallway cupboard for coats and shoes and tall cupboards where space is short, fitted cupboards made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

A good part of the housing around Mitcham is interwar, semi-detached or detached. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the bay window at the front, the space under the stairs and the box room are the usual places to gain storage. Any meters or fuse board under the stairs stay accessible, and the storage is planned around them.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Looking after your furniture

Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Deal with any damp walls first
  • Let us know about meters and boilers in the space
  • Look at your lease before fixing to the walls

We adjust the doors as part of the fitting. Timber and walls shift slightly through the year, and hinges can be adjusted to keep the gaps even. If a door catches, it is usually a small hinge adjustment.

Let us know about parking and access at the design visit. Many London streets are in controlled parking zones and some blocks need lifts or deliveries booked ahead.

Fitted storage in Mitcham

About 49% of the homes in the area around Mitcham went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 14% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There are 5 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Mitcham. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Terraced houses are home to about 43% of households in the neighbourhood around Mitcham, the 2021 Census shows. Terraced houses often have narrow halls and recesses where a shallow fitted cupboard helps.

Close to Cranmer Green? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place. Near listed buildings like Base of Windmill at Mill House, about 0.5 miles south-east of the centre of Mitcham, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted cupboards can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Questions we are often asked

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Mitcham?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Mitcham Eastfields station?

Yes, homes across Merton and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

Can you box in my boiler with a fitted cupboard?

Yes. We design the cupboard to keep the clearances and ventilation set out in the boiler maker’s instructions, and the doors open fully for servicing. Work on the boiler itself is a job for a Gas Safe engineer.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Usually not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character may need listed building consent.

What prompts fitted cupboards in Mitcham

Moving into a flat often shows how little built-in storage there is. A cupboard in the hallway or a spare recess can change how the home works, because it can reach right up to the ceiling.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • Cupboards for a utility or boot room
  • A cupboard for a recess or odd corner
  • A boiler cupboard that keeps access clear
  • A cupboard for the meters with easy access

If your children go to St Thomas of Canterbury Catholic Primary School or a school nearby, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit.

How fitting day works

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is usually only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Interwar houses typically have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, though we still measure the route in not just the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it is going.

  1. You get in touch and tell us where the cupboards should go. It might be a hallway, a landing, a utility or a boot room.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and talk through doors, shelves and rails.
  3. You get a written quote for the cupboards we have agreed, for you to read through.
  4. The cupboards are made in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cupboards in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. We check each door and shelf with you before we leave.

Before fitting day

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to

Advice

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

You can put together a flat-pack cupboard yourself, and that’s a real advantage. A fitted cupboard needs a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, but it’s built around your space. Off-the-shelf units come in set widths, so a run along a wall typically ends with a gap, so fitted furniture is made to the wall’s own length. It can also go up to the ceiling rather than stopping short.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. It’s useful to talk about parking during the design visit.
