TV and media units for homes in Ruxley

Built-in TV and media units bring the screen, set-top boxes, speakers and cables together in one piece of furniture. The wall is planned as a whole, rather than a stand with wires trailing behind it. For a living room in Ruxley, the first step is a design visit to measure up and look at your equipment. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about equipment running hot in a closed cupboard and a tangle of wires behind the TV.

Many homes around Ruxley date from the post-war decades. Post-war rooms tend to be squarer, with fewer alcoves and often no chimney breast. So TV and media units often run along a whole wall, or create their own recesses around the screen or a window. Walls may be concrete, block or brick, so fixings are chosen for the wall.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

What happens on fitting day

You won’t need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as we’ll have talked about at the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Drilling into concrete is noisier than into brick or plaster, so if neighbours are close, a note before fitting day can help. We work within any rules your building has on noise and hours. Dust is kept down and cleared as we go.

  1. You send us a note about the room and the unit you’d like.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and talk about colour and finish.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the finish set out.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which takes paint well, and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home; a hand-painted finish is applied once it is in and is easy to touch up later. Go gently with new paintwork while it cures.

Before we arrive

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

Built-in living-room furniture in Ruxley

About 51% of the homes in the streets around Ruxley went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 20% between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of Ruxley, Historic England’s list includes Ruxley Farmhouse (Grade II), under half a mile south, and Old Church of St Botolph (Grade II), under half a mile south-east. For a listed home, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. More than half of the homes in the streets around Ruxley (about 51%) were built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Rooms from that era are often squarer, with fewer alcoves and sometimes no chimney breast, so a full wall of TV and media units is often the answer, with fixings chosen for the wall.

For a flat near Albany Park station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. Close to Foots Cray Meadows? TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.

The problems TV and media units solve

Equipment on the floor is another reason. A unit gives every box its own space, with air to keep it cool.

If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:

  • Empty alcoves beside the TV
  • A TV stand that doesn’t fit the wall
  • Boxes and consoles on the floor
  • A TV that looks out of place in the room

If your children go to Hope Community School or a school nearby, TV and media units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • A written quote that sets out the job

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

When is bespoke worth it?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Questions we are often asked

Is parking a problem for fitting in Ruxley?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Do you make TV and media units for homes in Ruxley?

Yes. Ruxley is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Bexley and London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

How do I get a quote for TV and media units in Ruxley?

The first step is to use our contact form with a few details about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a quote in writing.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

How long will the fitting take?

The time on site depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We will explain what fitting day involves before we start.

Boards, parts and paint

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting often suits units in older houses. You choose the colour.

Plinths and scribe strips

The plinth raises the unit and hides a sloping floor. It can line up with the skirting.

What we don’t do

Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we don’t do:

  • Painting the walls and ceiling
  • Removing a chimney breast or any structural work
  • Setting up and tuning the TV, boxes and speakers

If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
