Tufnell Park TV and Media Units

In Tufnell Park, we design TV and media units around the room you actually have. We design your TV unit at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • Nowhere good for speakers
  • Alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste
  • A tangle of wires behind the TV

TV and media units in Tufnell Park

In a room with a chimney breast, the alcoves either side are natural places for media storage. The alcoves can take cupboards for equipment and shelves above leaving the TV in an alcove or on the breast. We keep any vent in the chimney breast clear. People usually come to us about a screen at the wrong height and empty alcoves beside the TV, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

In a house from the Victorian or Edwardian years, the chimney breast tends to survive even when the fireplace itself has been blocked up. Around Tufnell Park, where a large share of homes date from before 1919, that is a common starting point. The recesses either side take TV and media units scribed to the plaster and cut around the skirting.

Our quotes are written in plain words. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Fitting day, step by step

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made in our workshop come in next, one at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. You get in touch with details of the room and where it is in your home.
  2. We visit to plan the unit and check the way in. Let us know about parking too, since a van may need a visitor permit or a paid bay.
  3. A written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
  5. We bring the sections in, join them on the wall and scribe them to fit. The finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Before we arrive

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Starting with a design visit

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space. To share them, drop us a line using the contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

What it costs

There is no set price, because there’s no set room. What affects it comes down to:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

What we need to know

To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:

  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling

For a quote for TV and media units in Tufnell Park, use our contact form. Let us know which room it is and roughly what you have in mind, plus any rough measurements. We’ll arrange a design visit, then send a written quote.

Questions we’re often asked

Can you make TV and media units for a home in Tufnell Park?

Yes, we work across Islington, Tufnell Park included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details.

My house in Tufnell Park is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a written quote.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you send us a few details through our contact form.

Will the cables be hidden?

We plan cable routes through the unit from the start. Where cables reach the wall depends on the sockets, so it’s useful to plan sockets with your electrician.

Can you add sockets behind the TV?

We don’t do electrical work. Sockets and wiring are for your electrician, and Part P of the Building Regulations covers some electrical work in homes. We tell you where the unit will sit so the sockets end up in the right place.

What it’s made from

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF has no grain to show through. We use the moisture-resistant grade.

Spray-painted finish

Because it is sprayed before fitting, the unit comes painted. Give the paint time to cure fully.

What prompts TV and media units in Tufnell Park

Others are tired of furniture that does not fit. Bought units seldom suit an alcove, a slope or an uneven wall, and a bespoke unit is made for the space.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • A TV stand that doesn’t fit the wall
  • A tangle of wires behind the TV
  • Alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste
  • A screen at the wrong height

The wider area includes historic houses such as Witanhurst, about 1.2 miles north-west. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

Where other trades come in

Before you plan the job, it’s useful to know what we don’t do:

  • Structural changes to the wall
  • Installing aerials, satellite dishes or broadband
  • Any electrical work (your electrician handles that, and Part P covers some of it)

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room. How it works.

Built-in living-room furniture in Tufnell Park

About 56% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Tufnell Park went up before 1919, and about 15% between 1973 and 1999, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of Tufnell Park, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Mary Brookfield (Grade II*), under half a mile north-west, and Church of St Luke (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles south. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling can need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. More than half of the homes in the neighbourhood around Tufnell Park (about 56%) were built before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. In houses of that age, the chimney breast often becomes the TV wall, with cupboards in the alcoves for set-top boxes and speakers.

If you live in a period home close to Church of St Benet and All Saints, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If you live in a flat close to Upper Holloway station, TV and media units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Tufnell Park is about 2 miles east of Highbury, in the London Borough of Islington. Whether your home in Tufnell Park is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, we measure the room as it is and design around it. Across Islington, we cover Tufnell Park, along with the rest of the borough.

In NW5, N19 and N7, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. You’ll find streets here such as Hugo Road, Ward Road and Anson Road, and we cover homes on all of them for TV and media units. Neighbouring places we cover for TV and media units include Dartmouth Park (1 mile west), Upper Holloway (1 mile north), Gospel Oak (1 mile west), Lissenden Gardens (1 mile west) and Holloway (1 mile east). Other parts of Islington we cover include Highbury (2 miles east), Farringdon (3 miles south-east), Clerkenwell (3 miles south-east), Finsbury (3 miles south-east), St Luke's (3 miles south-east) and Islington (2 miles south-east).
