How we make TV and media units for St Luke's
If the TV is wall-mounted, we plan the panels and shelves around the bracket position, with a route for the cables behind the screen. If it stands on the unit, we size the top to suit, with the cables kept out of sight. If your home has a screen at the wrong height and nowhere good for speakers, TV and media units made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.
A large share of the homes around St Luke's date from 2000 onwards, and newer homes rarely come with any built-in shelving or media storage. TV and media units can be planned around where the sockets and aerial points already are, with cable routes built in. Plasterboard on studs takes fitted furniture well, as long as the fixings suit it.
Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Common questions about TV and media units
How do you fit TV and media units in a flat in St Luke's?
We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. TV and media units are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Do you make TV and media units for homes in St Luke's?
Yes. St Luke's is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Islington and London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.
Can a built-in unit hide all the wires?
That’s the aim, and it is planned from the start. Access panels make future changes easy. If the TV is wall-mounted, we plan a route behind the screen.
How much will my TV unit cost?
Every job is priced for its room: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. You’ll get a quote in writing once we’ve measured up.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
Can the TV unit fit a bigger TV later?
If you are likely to upgrade, we can leave room for it. It helps to know the size you’re thinking of.
TV and media units in St Luke's: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the area around St Luke's were built since 2000 (about 37%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 28%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for TV and media units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. There are 263 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of St Luke's. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and TV and media units can be designed to work around them. All of London, Islington included, is inside the ULEZ. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in St Luke's is covered by it. We go through parking and access at the design visit.
For families living near St Luke's CofE Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. The wider area includes historic houses like Mansion House, about 0.8 miles south. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. For a flat near Old Street station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Practical tips
Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:
- Note the screen size you have or plan to buy
- Plan any new sockets with your electrician before fitting
- Check where the seating will go
- Check each box’s guidance on ventilation and clearances
Doors can settle a little once the unit is in use. Most hinges can be adjusted to bring a door back in line.
Ask your electrician about new sockets rather than running extension leads through the unit.
Where other trades come in
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:
- Setting up and tuning the TV, boxes and speakers
- Any electrical work (your electrician handles that, and Part P covers some of it)
- Aerial, satellite or broadband installation
If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

From workshop to your room
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Newer homes often have finished floors, painted walls and new doors that mark easily, so we protect the route before carrying anything in. Door frames and corners get covers too. Once inside, the pieces are joined in place.
- It starts with a short note from you about the TV wall.
- We visit to plan the unit and check the way in.
- A quote in writing follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
- The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
- We bring the sections in, join them on the wall and scribe them to fit.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Make sure pets are kept safely away

Hand-painted finish
Hand painting can be done in your home after fitting. Small marks are simple to touch up.
Shelves
Each shelf is planned for what will sit on it, with room for cables behind.
Bespoke TV and media units or ready-made?
Bought units often have a single cable gap, but cables normally still show somewhere. A built-in unit has routes planned through it, with access panels for changes later. Ready-made units fixed to stud walls are often held by fixings that don’t suit the board. Fitted furniture is planned with fixings into the studs or made for the board, and heavy pieces can stand on the floor.
There is no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, discuss the design and then quote in writing. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.
